MUNCIE EVENING PRESS, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1977 PAGE 9 LOW WATER. OXYGEN LEVELS BLAMED 250 fish perish in White River here i i i river. The kill area, Craddock said, covered more than a mile length of the river, from upstream of the Nichols Avenue Bridge and extending past the Tillotson Street Bridge. Despite recent rains, Craddock said, the level of water and oxygen in the river has been at the danger point. "You can still walk across most places in the river." Craddock said.

"What rain we've gotten has just percolated into the ground. It's very low." He added that the fact Mun By JOHN CARLSON More than 250 fish were found dead in the White River this week in what is this summer's first recorded fish kill in the' area. According to John Craddock, director of the Division of Water Quality of the Muncie Sanitary District, the kill was "natural," resulting from low water and oxygen levels in the river. "It was not caused by any particular source point," Crad- 'dock said, meaning a discharge of sewage or pollutants into the area was experiencing drought conditions. The kill never materialized during those months.

"But when a natural kill happens, it happens," Craddock said. "There's really nothing that can be done about it." He added that state authorities had been informed of the kill, which was discovered by Water Quality Division field biologist Tom Bowling. Of the 252 fish that died in the kill, only 18 were game fish, Craddock said. The rest were "rough" fish, such as carp. cie is located near the upper fork of the White River, where the water is naturally more shallow and less free moving, also contributed to the kill.

But while he noted that conditions for the kill were ripe, the kill was unexpected. "We had pretty much assumed that we'd made it through this summer without having a kill," Craddock said. "We thought we'd passed over the critical part of the year." Craddock had expressed fears that a fish kill would occur during June and July, when the They're cheering for Delfa involving instruction in cheers, stunts, tumbling and crowd psychology. The NWS said showers and thunderstorms would continue today and tonight in extreme southern Indiana, but other areas would not have rain again until Thursday. The extended forecast called for a chance of showers and thun-derstroms again Friday. Highs today headed into the 70s and should be in the same range Thursday after lows tonight in the 50s and 60s. Readings later in the week should climb into the 70s and 80s for highs and the 60s for lows. Portions of Indiana got a brief break today from showers and thunderstorms, but precipitation was scheduled to return Thursday.

Heavy rain Tuesday drenched some regions of the state and prompted the National Weather Service to issue flash flood watches. However, the flooding was not major. Monroeville in northeastern Indiana received 3.23 inches of rain Tuesday while Kokomo had 3.02. Greentown had 2.75 inches, West Lafayette 2.39 and vansville 1 16. However, other locales had much less precipitation.

Indianapolis Wilkinson joins assessor race Larry Wilkinson, who has already assumed the duties of the job, Tuesday became the second person to file his candidacy for Center Township assessor. Precinct committeemen will meet Oct. 1 to elect an assessor to fill the post vacated by Henry Collins. James Wilson, a former city building commissioner, is also in the race. Charles Patterson, county zoning administrator, announced he intends to run for the office, but has not yet filed his candidacy.

Wilkinson took over the office after Collins' resignation became effective on Monday. Collins enforced Wilkinson for the position. Collins quit in the third year of a second term after a lengthy feud with the County Council over funds for his office. He has since moved to Florida. The office of assessor will be up for election next year.

IU coed vanishes near Martinsville MARTINSVILLE, Ind.

(UPI) -Police said Tuesday night a daylong search of an area north of the city failed to turn up any clues in the disappearance of an Indiana University coed. Indiana State Police, using a helicopter, joined authorities from Morgan and Monroe counties Tuesday in the search for Ann Louise Harmeier, a 20year-old junior from Cambridge City. She was reported missing when she failed to arrive late Monday after leaving home earlier in the day following a weekend trip home. Her car was found abandoned about two miles north of the city along Indiana 37. Authorities said the vehicle was locked with its flashers operating.

Police said it appeared Miss Harmeier left the older model car because it was overheating. Investigators said she was about 5-foot-5 and 100 pounds with light apple blonde hair and brown eyes.
