Said longtime competitor, Caroline Lowe you went to a crime scene, you can be sure see three things: yellow crime tape, cops and Grace reminisced recently about his career, the good and the bad of TV news reporting and his plans. Q. What will you miss most about the biz? A.

miss being out front on the issues. miss the power and the ability of the media to point out the guy with not so much money who is getting worked over by the system. Plus, miss the people at KARE. a classy, great bunch of people. Q.

What has changed the most about local broadcast news since you started in television? A. The travel budgets sure what they were 20 to 25 years ago. There much we cover. go across the world at the drop of a hat. not just at KARE, but all stations have gotten away from daily coverage of the county boards and city councils; now we just pick and choose.

I think too bad. I always thought one of our main functions was to hold public officials accountable. Q. your most memorable story? A When you end up in solitary confinement in a prison in a foreign country, that has to be the most memorable. I went to Poland during the Solidarity upheaval in the early 1980s and was arrested on suspicion of being a spy because I was trying to get some story videotapes out of the country.

It was only an overnight stay, but I was worried at the time end up there for a couple years. Q. What you miss? A. a lot of sadness on this beat. hard to come back to the station after some events, especially when they involve kids.

You feel terrible for what just witnessed and then got to make sense of it for the viewer. Q. Can news reporters ever really retire? A. I really think I can. We have a little mobile home at Myrtle Beach.
