By Trudi Hahn Star Tribune Staff Writer One day when Geneva Southall was studying for her doctorate in music performance and music literature at the University of Iowa, a teacher brought in a book that dismissed black composer Wiggins as retarded. Southall, one of the few black students there at the time, found the experience humiliating, said her daughter, Tisch Jones, a theater arts professor at the University of Iowa. It put Southall on a path as an educator that combined her scholarship about black musicians with African- American studies. Southall, the former chairwoman of the African-American and African Studies Department at the University of Minnesota, died Jan. 2 at her home in Iowa City, Iowa.

She was 78 and had suffered several strokes in 2003. After getting a degree from Dillard University, in her native New Orleans, Southall pursued a career in piano performance, including chamber-music performances in the 1950s in Europe. When her first husband died at age 28, her daughter was only 6, and Southall began preparing for a career in college-level teaching. (A second marriage ended in divorce.) She was teaching at South Carolina State in Orangeburg in the early 1960s when she took her daughter to a mass demonstration against segregation. Lawmen with fire hoses awaited them, Jones said, and both were jailed briefly.

After Orangeburg came Iowa City, where Southall, at the University of Iowa, encountered the disrespect scholars showed Wiggins, a slave whose owner had exploited his musical talent. In 1982, Southall became the first person to record music. She also wrote three books about his life. was her major contribution as a research said John Wright, a professor and former chairman in the African- American and African Studies Department at the University of Minnesota. She taught courses in the history of African-American music, African-American classical composers and Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Latin music, he said.

Southall joined the department in 1970. It had a strong community outreach program, Wright said, that included Southall helping form the Black Music Educators of the Twin Cities in 1974, when she was department chairwoman. The group, a network of black teachers, was formed out of concern that black students joining school performance groups, said Margaret LaFleur, another of the founders and a retired Minneapolis Schools music teacher. were always our focus, developing their she said. The Twin Cities group became part of the National Association of Negro Musicians in 1981 and disbanded by the mid- 1990s, LaFleur said.

In 1992, Southall retired from the U. She remained active on the board of directors of Dillard University, where her ashes will be scattered in March, Jones said. In addition to her daughter, survivors include four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Jan.
