Mark Calcavecchia 411 Florida's Brantley will get 'meaningful minutes' GAINESVILLE Expect to see John Brantley quarterback the Florida Gators in the first halves of games for once and not just against cupcakes or mop-up time. Coach Urban Meyer said Tim Tebow backup will receive "meaningful minutes" this season, Tebow, who is vying for his second Heisman Trophy and third national title, hasnt shared many snaps since 2006, as a freshman playing as an situational substitute for Chris Leak. "He's starting to earn that right said Meyer at UF Media Day.

"If he screws up and starts to hit reverse on that practice field then we'll back off." Brantley completed 18-of-28 passes for 235 yards, three touchdowns and an interception while playing sparingly in 2008. The redshirt sophomore is close to 100 percent after offseason ankle surgery. Meyer said the offense might be more "throw-heavy" with Brantley in the game, but the overall game plan will remain intact. Brantley doesn't have Tebow's natural rushing instincts but has a textbook throwing motion. ARKANSAS At Fayetteville, Razorbacks tight end Chris Gragg could miss the upcoming season after dislocating his left ankle.

Gragg was hurt at Wednesday's practice. Coach Bobby Petrino said afterward the sophomore would likely need surgery. Gragg caught only one pass last season, but it was a 25-yarder on fourth down late in the fourth quarter of a 28-27 win over Louisiana-Monroe. He moved from wide receiver to tight end this spring and was listed third on the depth chart. AUBURN At Auburn, The morning after the Tigers' first preseason scrimmage brought no apparent change to a battle for the starting quarterback job that goes at least three-deep.

Neil Caudle, Kodi Burns and Chris Todd are still splitting practice snaps equally with the first-team offense. Freshmen Tyrik Rollison and Clint Moseley are running the second-team offense. MICHIGAN At Ann Arbor, Coach Rich Rodriguez says cornerback J.T. Turner has been academically cleared to play. The highly touted freshman is expected to practice with the team today.

also says junior linebacker Marell Evans and junior defensive tackle are looking at options to transfer from the program. NORTH CAROLINA At Chapel Hill, N.C.: At first, it was hard for Tar Heels football player Kendric Burney to swallow. They handed him a pill containing a battery, thermometer and radio transmitter and told him it would lodge in his intestine, it would stick around for one to two days to measure his core body heat. But by down the vitamin-sized CorTemp capsule, Burney and 17 other Tar Heels football players began sweating out data that will be used later this season to help determine whether higher body temperatures increase the possibility of concussions. UNC's coaches also plan to use the data to better regulate drills during practice and during games in heat that often reaches the high 90s through the early stretch of fall games.

Freshman Donavan Tate has left preseason camp to consider an offer to play baseball for the San Diego Padres. Tate was a touted quarterback prospect, but he was also the third overall pick in the baseball's amateur draft this summer. The school says Tate arrived in Chapel Hill on Saturday and attended meetings and practices before leaving Wednesday morning. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA At Los Angeles: Trojans quarterback Aaron Corp has a small crack in his bruised left knee and will be out about two weeks. An MRI taken Wednesday revealed the crack on the head of Corp's left fibula.

The redshirt sophomore was rolled onto by a lineman during Monday's practice. Doctors found Corp has no ligament damage and won't need surgery. Corp was chosen by Carroll as the Trojans' first-string quarterback coming out of spring practice. Freshman Matt Barkley will take all the first-team reps during Corp's absence. TENNESSEE At Knoxvllle, It's hard to think of a more naturally talented safety than Tennessee's Eric Berry.

The Ail-American wants you to meet freshmen Janzen Jackson and Darren Myles Jr. "They're going to be incredible," Berry said. "You all look at me right now and think of me as this guy, but they come in with a lot more natural ability, and just seeing how they get to the ball and some of the plays that they make it's pretty incredible." Berry was the only Volunteer guaranteed a spot on the starting roster when Tennessee opened fall camp, but coach Lane Kiffin has plenty of choices of who to surround him with in the secondary. VIRGINIA TECH At Blacksburg, The Hokies are scurrying for an established runner to complement quarterback Tyrod Taylor after losing all-conference tailback Darren Evans to a season-ending knee injury Tuesday. Evans' injury elevates Josh Oglesby to No.

1 on the current depth chart. Seldom-used last season as a redshirt freshman, he rushed for 88 yards on 38 carries. Redshirt freshman Ryan Williams and true freshman David Wilson now figure prominently in the tailback equation. They were much more acclaimed in high school than was Oglesby.
