Chambers, Newcastle.

Democratic floor leader, declared it would create a closed corporation of political leaders who would select the party candidates and deprive the people of the right to select their public officers. Senator Nejdl denounced the bill, objecting to the secret convention balloting system. He declared it opened the way to bribery. Defending the proposed law, Senator Joe Rand Beckett, Republican, Indianapolis, said it "safeguards and takes care of the people's interests." The bill as amended provides for city, county, congressional district, legislative district and judicial district conventions to make nominations. In counties and cities of less than 50,000 population the holding of the primary convention would be optional with the central committee of each political party.

This project work is available not only to women In rural communities but to all women of the state. Leaders of the project believe that at no time in the history of project work in Indiana has the selection of food and food values been so inv portant as it is today when parts of the state have been seriously affected by the drought, making it impossible to raise the regular crops and obliging persons to substitute other foods. For the past year the Wayne county clubs have been carrying on the nutrition project which has been chosen for study again this year. Details regarding the project may be secured from Miss Marie Bolen- ADVER TISEMENT sumed two hours of the senate day, while it took but a few minutes for the almost unanimously agreed upon major amendments to be adopted.

Senator Anderson Ketchum, Democrat, Greensburg, said he likely would propose another amendment providing that every adult in Indiana file a return at which time he would be required to pay a filing fee, of $1, or. $1.50. Should the person filing the return have to pay an income tax, the filing fee would be deducted. Senator Ketchum said he believed it to be the duty of every one residing in the Htate to help carry some share of the burden and that his proposal would bring that about. Both income tax bills provide that the funds estimated at approximately $10,000,000 shall be used to lighten the tax on real estate property.

ThS senate, after completing work on the tax bill, failed to pass a measure which would abolish the primary system, the vote being 24 to 20. Lieutenant Governor Edgar D. Bush and Senator James J. Ncjdl, Republican, Whiting, engaged In another of their sporadic verbal encounters over senate rules and delayed the roll calls to pass 12 bills, four of which originated in the senate. The only spirited debate of the day in that chamber occurred over the Benz bill which would reduce the requirements for teachers of primary grades from 72 to 36 weeks in a normal school.

The bill failed to pass for want of two votes, the count being 49 to 32. Committee reports and introduction of 18 new bills comprised the other business of the day in the house. For the first time during the current session, the general assembly will hold a Saturday session. The house will convene tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock while the senate will start an hour later. Both Republicans and Democrats spoke In favor of the major amendments attached to the personal Income tax bill In the senate.

Senator Hoffman declared that the bill as passed by the house contained exemptions that "will nullify the original intent." "I would not be for any bill which would not yield sufficient revenue to make substantial reductions in the property tas," Senator Hoffman 6aid.
