Nov. I. Jams Fletch of the Milwaukee team of the American Association, discovered the 'spit ball' while a member of the Los Angeles club of the Coast league in 1902. But Chesbro was one of the first and probably the most successful of the major league twirlers to use it. "Stricklett's discovery was quite accidental.

It occurred one morning while the team was practicing at Riverside, before the opening of the league season. Stricklett happened to moisten his fingers and send up a slow ball. Ha noticed the peculiar break it took and set about developing his find. The result is the 'spit ball." "I was a member of the Los Angeles team at the time and learned the trick from Stricklett, though I did not master the ball during the season of 1902. SAYS IT 18 SIMPLE.

"Various theories explaining the quick and mystifying 'break' of the 'spit ball' have been evolved, but few baseball rooters can tell you Just why and how the peculiar 'break' is brought about "It is very simple. The ball simply follows the natural law of gravitation. The tnrae propelling it diminishes the closer the ball gets to the plate and the result Is a sudden drop, either to the right or left, according to the way the pitcher releases his grip. "The 'spit ball' Is harder to control than the curve and Its control can be mastered only by patient practice. I fill up with If the rest or tne ma mum refuse to sign.
