Vital statistics 10 Kokomo (Ind.) Tribune Friday, July 5, 1991 Hoosiers rally 'round the flag for the Fourth ByBobSeavey Associated Press writer Thousands of Hoosiers jammed parade routes, picnic grounds and to celebrate the nation's 215th birthday anniversary and pay tribute to men and woman of the armed forces. "It was just terrific," said Sen. Dan Coats, as he climbed down from a ride after parading through downtown Indianapolis. "This is what the Fourth of July is all about." The balmy day with temperatures in the 80s statewide provided the ideal summertime atmosphere for back yard barbecues, park picnics and beach front outings. Residents crowded parks from Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore to Brown County to Cllfty Falls.

West Beach in the dunes lakeshore just east of the Lake- Porter County line off U.S. 12 was filled by 12:30 p.m. Thursday with some 2,600 people. As people began leaving another 200 people entered the oeach area in the afternoon, a gate attendant said. Morning crowds also forced closing of public beaches at Beverly Shores by early afternoon, she said.

Gulf veterans marched by, but a different, sometimes heartier kind of applause, greeted the 16 Vietnam veterans. "It sure brings tears to your eyes," said Bob Ankrom, who was holding one end of the Vietnam veteran's banner in the parade. A woman, close to tears herself and clutching her baby, had just rushed into the street to hug Ankrom, an Air Force staff sergeant in Vietnam in 1971-72. He didn't know the woman. "When I came home, I was sneaking in in the middle of the night.

This time it's walking down the street," he said. Rick Winters, also of Evansville, a Marine sergeant in Vietnam in 1969-70, shook his head over the difference. "They're not calling us 'baby anymore," he said. In Muncie, Tom Modglin, president of Vietnam Veterans of Delaware County, told Desert storm soldiers, "Welcome home. We're glad you got home safe and quickly.

When we came home, there were no parades. People didn't like we were in. Army Spec. Ken Snodgrass of Muncie, a tank driver in Desert Storm, enjoyed the welcome but feared it was "kind of overdone" based on the length of the war. Rep.

Phil Sharp, spoke in Muncie, telling the crowd the Persian Gulf veterans are deeply appreciated. "We still have a few folks over there and families that are still grieving over alow," Sharp said. The community of New Pekin held its 161st holiday fest. Officials in the Washington County town say the celebration is the oldest continuing one in the country. The Hoosier Hero Homecoming festivities in Indianapolis including a parade, memorial service, concert and fireworks display drew nearly 200,000 people for the day-long event, said event spokesman Dan O'Brien.

"It was a lot more patriotic than parades of other years," said Nancy Yoder. "To me, seeing the ex-prisoners of war, seeing them and the expression on their faces meant a lot," said Yoder, who was selling buttons commemorating the event from a booth along the Meridian Street route. The parade, with about 90 floats and exhibits, was led by Gov. Evan Bayh and Lt. Gen.

Williams Keys, commander of a Marine unit that helped liberate Kuwait. Soldiers escorted military vehicles ranging from the Hoosier- made Humvees to tanks and even a Patriot missile. Obituaries John Lee John 0. Lee, 69, 2446 N. Jay died at 12:05 a.m.
