On Friday evening began this solemn occasion for the Hebrew race. Yom Kippur, the "white fast," or as it is commonly called the day of atonement, is a day of solemn fasting from suuset one day to the appearance of three stars in the sky on the day follow ing. Leviticus 23, 2G, gives the scriptural authority for the observ ance of this fast ou the 10th day of the month Tishri. It celebrates the grace of God in providiug par don for the transgressions of men and is intended that each man should make atonement to God by deep penitence for his own sins. Fasting is rigidly observed, except in cases ot extreme puysicai weak.

ness, and it may be noted how zealous are these devoted people in their observance of this requirement of the law. Young children look forward eagerly to the time when they too will be permitted to fast, and thus observe the customs of their forefathers. The writer has been told by a rabbi that it is on this day only of all the year, that the personal name of God Jehovah is spoken, and then only by the rabbi, who turns his face towards Jerusalem, and 'calls upon the sacred name ot Jehovah to receive the atonement of the people. On other occasions, the Almighty is addressed as Adonoi, the title only of the Most High. Christians might well imitate this reverence for the name of God.
