Jodie Foster's Oscar-winning performance far outweighs the movie's exploitative nature. Based on a true story of a waitress who brought criminal charges against onlookers who cheered while she was raped, the movie is melodramatically directed by Jonathan Kaplan. 8 p.m., AMC (Channel 34) DISNEY'S MOST UNLIKELY HEROES. This half-hour special is a tribute to some of the classic Disney characters with which audiences have fallen in love. They include Steamboat Willie, Bambi and the Seven Dwarves.

Segments with Nicolas Cage, Demi Moore, Jason Alexander, Tom Hulce and Kevin Kline recalling their own Disney memories are fun. It won't take long, however, for viewers to realize that this special is a not-very-subtle attempt to plug Disney's forthcoming The Hunchback of Notre Dame. 8:30 p.m., ABC (Channel 6) MOVIE: Babymaker: The Dr. Cecil Jacobson Story (1994). This distasteful movie, based on a true story, makes voyeurs of us all.

An arrogant doctor (George Dzundza) who is a fertility expert helps a woman (Melissa Gilbert) become pregnant. Later, she discovers the doctor was the donor for her and many other inseminations. Dzundza doesn't have a clue how to play the doctor and opts for abundant arrogance with a modicum of charm. Gilbert strikes a righteous note and never lets up. 9 p.m., CBS (Channel 8) BUZZKILL (Series premiere).

This new "reality" series features various pranks performed on unsuspecting victims that are caught on videotape. Following the trend of Real World and Road Rules, Buzzkill cashes in on the popularity of reality shows and makes you wonder why they bother calling it Music Television anymore. 10 p.m., MTV (Channel 33) Grew to dan, weeks in mwM, nurnbw ol towns Weekend groa MOVIE: Son in Law (1993). The filmmakers, who apparently chose to rely on comedian Pauly Shore's spaced-out shtick, grossly miscalculated. The story, about a college freshman (Carla Gugino) who brings home a wacky upper-classman for Thanksgiving, is improbable, to put it mildly.

Lane Smith tries to provide some audience sympathy as the flustered potential father-in-law, but it's for naught. 8 p.m., FOX (Channel 11) 3RD ROCK FROM THE SUN. "Green-eyed Dick" (Repeat). This clever episode finds Dick (John Lithgow) seething with jealousy when Dr. Albright's former lover (Ed Begley Jr.) shows up to promote his book, which is dedicated to her.

AP I Notrwpontlbl tor ocktonta Mini 18 ynk or ektor No aleohon Word of mouth hasn't been good for The Cable Guy' By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES Despite a first-place debut and $19.8 million in ticket sales, it appears The Cable Guy isn't connecting. The dark Jim Carrey comedy captured the top spot at the box office in its premiere, narrowly surpassing The Rock, which took in $18.5 million in its second weekend in fewer theaters. But the Carrey film's word-of-mouth was "just terrible," and Arnold Schwarzenegger's Eraser, opening Friday, might appropriate Cable's Guy's core audience of male teens.

The movie's struggles come at an awkward time for Sony Pictures, which shocked the industry by paying Carrey $20 million to star. Carrey's last four films, including Dumb and Dumber and the Ace Ventura movies, all have grossed in excess of $100 million in North American theaters, making him one of the town's most bankable stars. The Cable Guy, a sinister story that was savaged by the nation's leading critics, may not even gross $60 million, Sony executives said privately Monday, For the film to just break even, it would have to make at least $60 million domestically. Playing in 2,657 theater locations, The Cable Guy edged The Rock, playing at 2,415 theaters. But "The Rock" outperformed The Cable Guy on Saturday and Sunday, proof that few people were recommending the Carrey film to friends, analysts said.

CinemaScore, an independent research firm that surveys movie audiences, found that Cable Guy patrons including otherwise loyal Carrey followers were repelled by the film Interviews with 340 moviegoers in Atlanta, St Louis and Los Angeles yielded an overall Cable Guy grade of plus, said CinemaScore's Ed Mintz. "That's the lowest score Carrey has ever had. It's just terrible," Mintz said. "The movie is going down." Mintz said ticket buyers who called themselves Carrey fans gave Cable Guy a grade only of minus. Andy Licht, who co-produced The Cable Guy, said it was too early to judge the film's ACCESS CODES Now Showing I Fawn Mrs.

As for the bad notices, said Licht's partner Jeff Mueller, "I think if we had gotten a good review from The New York Times, that would have been scary." Carrey's last two movies opened to better returns. Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls took in $37.8 million in its first weekend, while Batman Forever, in which Carrey co-starred, grossed $52.8 million in its debut Cable Guy stars Carrey as a mysterious cable television installer who befriends and then stalks a customer, played by Matthew Broderick. Unlike some of Carrey's earlier films, The Cable Guy is occasionally violent, including a scene where Carrey's character pummels a man in a restaurant bathroom Sony Pictures was widely criticized for paying Carrey a then-record $20 million to star in Cable Guy. The huge salary has rippled throughout Hollywood, causing lesser-known performers to command salaries exceeding $1 million. The other new film in wide release, Moll Flanders, fared poorly, netting just $956,000.
