Dzundza doesn't have a clue how to play the doctor and opts for abundant arrogance with a modicum of charm. This new "reality" series features various pranks performed on unsuspecting victims that are caught on videotape. The dark Jim Carrey comedy captured the top spot at the box office in its premiere, narrowly surpassing The Rock, which took in $18.5 million in its second weekend in fewer theaters. But the Carrey film's word-of-mouth was "just terrible," and Arnold Schwarzenegger's Eraser, opening Friday, might appropriate Cable's Guy's core audience of male teens.

The movie's struggles come at an awkward time for Sony Pictures, which shocked the industry by paying Carrey $20 million to star. Carrey's last four films, including Dumb and Dumber and the Ace Ventura movies, all have grossed in excess of $100 million in North American theaters, making him one of the town's most bankable stars. The Cable Guy, a sinister story that was savaged by the nation's leading critics, may not even gross $60 million, Sony executives said privately Monday, For the film to just break even, it would have to make at least $60 million domestically. Playing in 2,657 theater locations, The Cable Guy edged The Rock, playing at 2,415 theaters.
