PBA Hilton Hotels Classic (17) 9 p.m. Mickey Thompson Series (17) Notre Dame heads for Big East hoop life II 1 i 1 SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) Tradition, and the right to call the shots, mean a lot at Notre Dame. It Wasn't easy to give up either one. Ninety-six years after the university played its first men's basket- Bail game, it finally has joined a Conference.

Notre Dame traded autonomy a cherished institution Jinder the Golden Dome for Svhat easily could be a fast-track back to national prominence as the 43th member of the Big East. The Fighting Irish will compete every sport except football beginning in 1995. As the only big- cxoney sport involved and the only Sport not currently tied to a conference, basketball was the obvious focus of the move announced Monday. "But surrendering its independent status long has been a sore Subject for Notre Dame. While bas- KJjtball coach John MacLeod cheered the lifting of his biggest re- barrier, athletic director cruit Big East in 1995 Notre Dame, Villanova, Syracuse, Seton Hall, Providence, Boston College, Connecticut, Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Miami, St.

John's, Temple and Virginia Tech Dick Rbsenthal bristled at the notion that Notre Dame had been forced into a league. "Clearly, we didn't join the Big East because we wanted to cease being independent," said Rosenthal, in Colorado for what he said was his first real vacation in seven years. "I think Notre Dame could have stayed very well as an independent." The main reason Notre Dame sought out the Big East last November was to enhance its non- revenue spprts, many of which have climbed to national prominence, Rosenthal said. That opportunity seemed to have been missed just tour months ago, when the Big East passed up Notre Dame to concentrate on self-pres- ervation. The conference expanded to 12 full-time members March 9, adding football-only schools Rutgers and West Virginia but denying the same status to Temple and Virginia Tech, also football-only members.

That ended a basketball vs. football membership feud that had threatened to shatter the 15-year- old conference. "When we went to 121 basically thought the Notre Dame thing was dead," said Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese, adding that considering Notre Dame for membership in March would have been "the most damaging thing that could have happened" to the conference. Rosenthal told Tranghese a week later that Notre Dame, also talking to the Atlantic Coast Conference and other leagues, still was interested. But the Big East had virtually ruled out further expansion before 2000, leaving room only for "a unique situation." Notre Dame was that exception.

After moving quickly to gauge the feeling of athletic directors at the 12 full-time schools, Tranghese found that Notre Dame was welcome. The 12 Big East presidents voted unanimously last Friday to admit Notre Dame. "While the Big East was not really looking to expand, this was a rather unique opportunity for the Big East because of Notre Dame's stature," said Syracuse athletic director Jake Crouthamel. There never was talk about including Notre Dame's football team. Tranghese said the addition of Notre Dame was "probably the greatest Ben-Gay we could apply to our wounds." Already entrenched in the New York television market, the nation's biggest, the Big East now moves into the Chicago market, which is No.

2. Notre Dame, about 90 miles east of Chicago, has a huge following there, The conference also gets Notre Dame's immense national following, as well as the addition of lesser-known sports in which the Irish are national powers, including men's and women's tennis and soccer, baseball, lacrosse and volleyball, Notre Dame has been a member of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference', a non-football conference, in every sport but basketball. Notre Dame, Rutgers and West Virginia will begin competing in all sports in the 1995-96 season. A conference format has not been worked out, although it appears likely there will be two divisions with each team playing the others at least once. It also appeared there would be no conflict between the Big East's television deal with CBS, which runs through 2001, and Notre Dame's football package with NBC, which includes four basketball games a year through 2001.

Irish, the largest impact of joining the Big East appears to be the potential for its basketball program: to return to the prominence of me 1970s and '80s, when it was perennially among the nation's top teams under Digger Phelps. While struggling through back- to-back losing seasons, MacLeod has said often that he is losing recruits to major conferences. CqU- pled with its athletic and academta- reputations, membership in a oop' mier basketball league could quipkly bring Qhanlpionship-caU- berpllayers tp South. Bend. is munv bled to no one as reporters trickled'in news conference.

a big.day for us. I guarantee it.".
