Build-ing of Empire.

A story of the South's struggle for freedom during the dark days after the war between the states and the birth of the United States as a coast-to-coast empire is told in "The reconstruction period which opens at the Liberty Theater, Sunday. An all-star cast, headed by Randolph Scott, Joan Bennett, May Robson. Walter Brennan, Robert Cummings and Harvey Stephens, the scenic background of the Texas plains and the direction of James Hogan, combine to give this theme the screen treatment it deserves. Carpet-baggers Rule The post-bellum South provides the setting for the story. Defeated in war and weakened by four years of back-breaking sacrifice, it is prevented from getting back on its feet by a gang of the most miserable men ever to appear on the American scene the carpet-baggers.

Northern adventurers who descended on the South after the peace and took advantage of the conditions to make fortunes for themselves at the expense of the impoverished rtatives. Hated by the Southerners and despised by all decent Northerners, their life-and-death struggle with the Texans makes a screen story that will not be forgotten. As Dixie belle, 'Joan Bennett goes the "Jezebels' and "Scarlet O'Haras one better and actually instigates a revolt against the crooked officials who are running her state into the ground. She is only turned from her plan by a Southern officer, Scott, who insists that "the great cause" is lost and that the Texans should devote their energies to building up the empire of the Southwest. Humphrey Bogart and George Bancroft take roles as a crooked lawyer and politician, respectively, while Ann Sheridan provides the love interest. The climatic scene of the picture, which shows Cagney walking "the last mile," is declared to be one of the greatest in motion picture history. James Cagney's role is made-to-order for him. A breezy, tough, cocky ruffian who grows up to be a big-shot gangster is Cagney's forte.

Fat O'Brien plays the soft-spoken yet two-fisted priest, restrained yet powerful enough to balance the strong characterization by Cagney. On the screen next Thursday, only, will be "Road To Reno," featuring Glenda Farrell and Hope Hampton. Friday and Saturday will be "Thanks for the Memory," co-starring those screen favorites. Besides Cagney and O'Brien, the THRILLING RESCUE IN STRAND FEATURE Joan Crawford and Margaret Sullivan Starred. Joan Crawford and Margaret Sullivan were participants in one of the most hair-raising of motion picture history when Miss Crawford rushed into a burning building just after the roof had collapsed to rescue Miss Sullivan. The scene furnished a dramatic highlight of "The Shining Hour," film story of the Keith winter stage success, which opens Sunday at the Strand theater with a cast including besides the Misses Crawford and Sullivan, Robert Young, Melvyn Douglas and Fay Bainter. It was the largest controlled fire ever staged on a sound stage.

A 24-room house, the front rooms of which were furnished, was burned to the floor But not before Cameraman George Folsey had photographed someof the most thrilling fire scenes ever made. Adding To Thrills. The only protection Misses Crawford and Sullivan had were fireproof dresses, lined with asbestos, and a special fire-proof makeup which Jack Dawn, studio makeup chief, devised for the occasion. There was, of course, the entire studio fire department watching from the sidelines with huge fire hose at hand, ready to go into action should anything unforeseen happen. The company spent a fearful few second's when, after Miss Crawford had entered the blazing structure, she failed to come out.

She said she knew it would make the scene more exciting the longer Maggie and her stayed in. The scene successfully completed, after 35 minutes of almost continuous shooting and the burning embers cooled by water, it was found that no one working on the set was injured. y.
