"It was the only institution in America where nobody was killed or property was not damaged." The takeover ended after Gov. Otis R. Bowen granted amnesty to the inmates.

Three guards held hostage about 35 hours were released unharmed. State officials never reported an estimate on damage to the institution. Clay said he feared if McDaniel'i resolution was adopted, Hoosier taxpayers would suffer because reform and rehabilitation would be delayed. He said such a resolution could serve as a precedent for other states who do not want to listen to "legitimate prisoner grievances." Blowout Of Tires Brings Judgment Of $900,000 HATTIESBURG, Miss. (UPI) A federal court jury has awarded $900,000 to the estate of a man who was killed in a traffic accident apparently caused by blowouts of two tires.

The jury returned the judgment against Sears, Roebuck and Co. and the Michelin Tire Co. of France after hearing two weeks of testimony. Mrs. Doris Edwards, administrator of the estate of her husband, George, had sought $3.6 million in damages from the two firms and the Chrysler Corp.

The jury found that Chrysler was not liable. Edwards, 38, and his brother Carl were killed when their car crashed on U.S. 49 south of Hattiesburg in September, 1971. Police said the accident was caused by blowouts on two steel belted radial tires. Morgue Wagon Brought Back To "Living" SEATTLE, Wash.

(AP) Notes posted in the county morgue: "Morgue Wagon No. 748 is presently defunct. It died trying to climb Queen Ann Hill. Tow company trans; ported deceased to county garage for autopsy." (Signed: The Night Crew.) "With an injection of gas they were able to revive No. 748 and send it on its way.

No autopsy was necessary. However, a gas gauge transplant was implemented and the gauge is now accurate." (Signed: The Day Crew.) GARY, Ind. (AP) State Sen. Rudolph Clay, D-Gary, has attacked a proposal by Sen. Marliri MrDaniel which would put the legislature on record as opposing amnesty to persons involved in prison disturbances.

McDaniel, a Richmond Re. publican, said Friday that to grant amnesty to prisoners "who are burning and destroying thousands of dollars of taxpayers' property and who hold hostages under threat of violence and death is to encourage additional prison disturbances." Wants Resolutions McDaniel said the legislature should "declare that the policy of this state is opposed to granting amnesty for rioting prisoners" by passing concurret resolutions. Clay, an advocate of penal reform who acted as a spokesman for inmates during a Labor Day disturbance at the Indiana State Prison, responded Saturday that inmates did not destroy thousands of dollars worth of Coffee Claimed More Addictive Than Marijuana SALT LAKE CITY (UPI) -A former national mental health drug researcher days marijuana is not only harmless but less addictive than coffee. Dr. Louis Lemberger, a pharmacologist who studied marijuana, drug abuse and amphetamines as a staff member of the National Institute of Mental Health, said the weed produces no ill effects on the bodies of frequent users.

"The person who goes without his morning cup of coffee has withdrawal symptoms all day," Lemberger told a luncheon of physicians. "Marijuana has no withdrawal." "So far all evidence leads to the fact that it's not dangerous," he said. Lemberger, now with Lily Laboratories for Clinical Research in Indianapolis, said all studies on marijuana prior to 1964 are meaningless because the weed's active ingredient, tetrahydrocannibin-ol (THC), had not been identified.
