Due to wet weather conditions, most sweet corn is some three weeks behind last year. Many gardeners like to have sweet corn ready by July 4.

Failing to realize the makeup of sweet corn, most homeowners never get to taste it at its best. John A. Lott, extension horticulturist of Purdue University, points out that sweet corn begins to convert its sugar content into starch the moment after it is picked. Since corn is wind pollinated, corn should be planted in compact blocks rather than long narrow rows to insure good pollination and ear development. Early varieties will mature in 65-74 days with others ranging from 78- 83 days for maturity. County Civil Defense Co-Ordinator Resigns John L.
