No doubt: No contest. And only one thing left to do after the carnage that was Super Bowl XXIX Sunday night: Wonder, i there has ever been a more impressive offensive machine than the San Francisco 49ers, who mauled San Diego, 49-26. An irresistible force on the way; to history driven by a record? setting quarterback having the day he'd waited for his entire life the 49ers became the first five-time Super Bowl champions. And secured their legacy as one of the most explosive attacks ever seen; The final rampage to the top was led by game MVP Steve Young and his Super Bowl-record six touch down passes, three to Jerry Rice.

"To get to the big game and play what is maybe your best game ever, it was the kind of perfor mance that you have to feel good about," Young said. "I'll always remember it as my best effort but I hope there will be more to come." "He's freed himself emotional ly," coach George Seifert said. "He's just maturing. With every ballgame and every season, he gets better. Whatever critics he may have had, with the way he's played, he's got to be one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time." "This is something you'll never forget," said' Rice, who played more than half the game with a separated left shoulder.

As darkness fell in Joe Robbie Stadium, Young lived a dream. It was the 11th straight Super Bowl triumph by the NFC, whiclj, now leads 17-12 over the AFC.

CoverageDO HIRED? Report: Broncos naming Shanahan head coach Mike Shanahan, offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers, may become the Denver Broncos' new head coach as early as today, a published report says. Broncos owner Pat Bowlen is expected to meet then with Shanahan SHANAHAN to negotiate a final agreement, the Denver Post reported Sunday. The Broncos cannot hire Shanahan until the 49ers' season ends, which was Sunday night after the Super Bowl. A formal announcement of Shanahan's appointment was expected Tuesday, the newspaper said. Steve Young watched and waited and wondered what that would be like. He had two other Super Bowl rings, courtesy of Joe Montana.

This one is all his own. "I wish anyone who ever played football could feel this," Young said after a virtuoso performance in San Franciso's 49-26 Super Bowl romp over San Diego on Sunday. "I wish this for everyone. It's a great feeling." Young completed 24 of 36 passes for 325 yards and a record six touchdown passes. It was as good as a quarterback could play better, in fact, from a TD standpoint, that any quarterback had ever played in a Super Bowl.

And that included Montana, whose five-TD record Young shattered. Always, it seemed, Young was compared with Montana, especially after San Franciso wi I traded the three-time Super Bowl MVP three years ago and turned the job over to the left-hander from Brigham Young. In two of the last three years, Young was the league's MVP. Always, though, there was the question about the big game. Sources said the meetings were intended to pacify Bugel. Bugel, however, denied this. He confirmed meeting with White, but downplayed the significance. Davis had asked Shell to accept a reassignment to a front-office position, which he refused, sources said.

RAIDERS COACH: Assistant coach expected to be promoted. Art Shell's future in the air. It's not clear if Shell will be fired or reassigned. He was out of town and unavailable for comment.

White, 58, has had a curious coaching' stint with the Raiders.
