BORN TODAY Actor Peter Graves (1926), author George Plimpton (1927), writer John Updike (1932) Education Helps Gold Medalist Net Victory Against Disease (NU) Olympic Gold Medalist Mury Joe Fcrnandex knows whai it's like to take on competition. In Fernandtv. was (breed to pull out of the U.S. Open to undergo diagnostic surgery for endometriosis, a painful gynecological disorder that is often misdiagnosed as severe menstrual cramps. Fernandez, 24, is the first tennis star to publicly discuss her struggle with endometriosis.

Approximately one of every six women suffer from the disorder, which often has devastating effects on a woman's work performance, family life, sexuality and self-esteem. The experience of women like Fernandez has led to the development of a new educational program for female teens and their parents, sponsored by Zeneca Pharmaceuticals. The program includes a brochure series and a video featuring Fernandez, who discusses her personal experience with the disorder and its impact on her life and career. "When 1 had to drop out of the U.S. Open in 1993, 1 was upset, scared and embarrassed.

Through this educational program, 1 hope that young women will learn to recognize the symptoms of endometriosis and to go beyond the expected when coping with this long-term illness," said Fernandez. Fernandez collaborated with Dr. Deborah Metzger, director of the Reproductive Medicine Institute of Connecticut, and Dr. Mary Casey Jacob, assistant professor, department of psychiatry and obstetrics and gynecology, University of Connecticut Health Center, to write the brochure series. Materials are available in offices nationwide.

According to Dr. Jacob, because the physical symptoms associated with endomelriosis can have significant impact on social behavior and lifestyle, the brochures and video focus on emotional changes patients should expect when dealing with this type of long-term illness. Dr. Jacob and Fernandez offer their perspective on emotional changes to expect in relationships, how to cope with fertility issues, and how to take control of the disease through diet and exercise. Dr.

Metzger discusses the physiological effects of endometriosis and treatment options. "Zeneca Pharmaceuticals is excited to be the first pharmaceutical company to support this world-class athlete in her effort to educate young women and their families about endometriosis and its associated lifestyle impact," said Dr. Gerard T. Kennealey, senior director of medical affairs at Zeneca Pharmaceuticals. "We hope that this program will help increase awareness of the disorder and teach young women how to manage it physically and emotionally.".
