BS Thursday, December 5, 2002 Oshkosh Northwestern State Avenue of Angels lacks off in Waupun I II Hhh vVF SWF SWT- 23 By Marianne Szabo for the Northwestern WAUPUN In frosty weather, hundreds of Waupun residents enjoyed the warmth of -m comfort. (L On the step of the historic City Hall, visitors were greeted by over a dozen lighted Christmas trees, live music and a jolly Santa, who let both young and old sit on his lap. Former Alderman Preston Osteen said the parade was the best he had seen in a long time. His favorite float was that of the 21st Century Grant project of the Waupun School District, bedecked with canoe and computers. He said, "My brother was Santa Claus in it.

That's what made it so great." His brother, Charles, is the 21st Century Grant Project director for the Waupun School District. Inside City Hall, Good Medicine and Vicki Belleville and several members of the Pella and helped serve the desserts. Long lines of children waited to whisper their wishes into Santa's ear, and smiled for the cameras. Brian O'Donovan, police liaison officer for the Waupun School District, was nowhere to be seen in the City Hall auditorium after the parade, but some said Santa's eyes bore a striking resemblance to O'Donovan's. It was also uncanny that Santa knew the names of about half of the children.

Santa said the kids were surprised to hear him say their names but were even more taken aback that he knew "whether they were naughty or nice." Children went home with a bag of treats, prepared specially for them, and the grown-ups considered the evening itself a treat. Praise Band warmed the auditorium with "Silent Night" and other familiar Christmas songs. Guitar player Joey Reichhoff of Waupun, who was helping out for the night, and whose mother, Sue Reichhoff is a Pella Praise Band member, said the music had a message and was "full of spirit -the true meaning of Christmas. We're singing about God's love and how Jesus was born." Desserts and hot cider were off to the side, where Waupun teachers and National Honor Society students volunteered their time to the community. Julie Verheyen, wearing a festive reindeer hat -which she said was her "best reindeer impersonation" said about 75 teachers donated desserts or gave money toward its purchase, TOWER PAINT lrlVilAMIl I O'-a 714 Orc(aa, OtkkMk 135-3470 I II Hour: Mml-H.

The city council has given Mayor Sharon Kotter permission to find a realtor and put the old city-county complex up for sale, as the two local governments move into a new $44 million building across the street. Some councilors suggested the city should study possible municipal uses for the building, building would fetch that much.

It needs a new furnace and may have structural issues. The county owns 53 percent of the building and the city 47 percent, but the city will take the lead on the sale. Kotter said if a decent offer isn't made by early 2003, the building likely will be demolished to make way for a parking lot. "Someone either wants it or it's coming down," she said.
