Some used comparably oversized scissors to trim men's ties.

Men dressed as bears tried and failed to repel the assault. And everyone, male and female, swigged beer and schnapps, preferably out of baby bottles. So began the Rhineland's carnival season, or what locals call the "five days of madness." On the first day: "Weiberfastnacht," or "Women's Carnival," an annual and proto-feminist ritual. While Germany is known more for a love of rules than for a love of fun, inhibitions are cast to the wind when carnival comes around. "It's a time to switch off your troubles, to let yourself go," said 41 -year-old Karin Stein, clutching a large plastic cup brimming a mix of beer and cola.

Communities all along the Rhine celebrate Women's Carnival. But the place to be is Beuel, where the festival originated About 4,000 people crowded in front of -hall, on Thursday, waiting for the day's traditional denouement: the storming of the building by local residents dressed as washerwomen. As always, the make-believe laundry women scaled the building using ladders, and beat back the defense force of men in bear suits. Nearly every adult spectator and many not-so-adult ones drank beer and just about any kind of alcoholic brew you could think of from cups, glass bottles and baby bottles. "I'm a man from Mars," said 17-year-old Stefanie Parsch, ing a little bottle of schnapps, ex- plainingwhyshewasdressed ina silver jumpsuit with antennae on her head.

On a bandstand in front of the town hall, two men wearing bowler hats sang about how "we men are the greatest gift to the world." Everyone gets into the act, even politicians. Federal ministries stopped work at mid-moming and al- loWed costumed revelers to dance and sing through the corridors. Clerks at stores and banks wore face paint and clown costumes, and got off work early for drinking that would go on 'til dawn. Women's Carnival started in Beuel around 1824, tradition has it, when the town's laundry women grew tired of seeing their; they earned washing the clothes oL Bonn- University professors and of hotel patrons along the' Rhine. So after watching their husbands have all the fun, the women of Beuel began doing some of their own celebrating, engaging in some fairly defiant singing, poetry reciting and coffee drinking.
