TOE NEW YORK TIMES. SUNDAY. DECEMBER 8. 1918. DR A A By John Corbtn Walter llampdea'a Macbeth.

The great gifts of poetic presence, voice, and reading which gave quality to Mr. Hampden's Hamlet are no less evident In his Macbeth, which waa heartily welcomed yesterday morning at the Plymouth. His athletic stature and manly cheat tones are. In fact, more appropriate to the victorious soldier and inveterate assassin than to the febrile, vacillating Prince. Thla Is a Than of ir.ajeatlc power, a 'tyrant of redoubtable truculence.

Yet, beneath his martial exterior, the Macbeth of Shakespeare la from the first scarcely less febrile than Hamlet, and. as the power of th Weird Slaters develops upon he sinks more and more deeply Into life's fitful fever until, at the close, he ts mentally broken, the mere wreck of a man. In indicating this progressiva ectaay Mr. Hampden ts lea successful. Externally there is virtually no change.

Thla is in part due to the fact that Mr. Hampden has densely covered hi featurea with a Vikings beard, which leavea only a none and two folds from the noatrila tor facial expressionthree features almost equally rigid. If it were not for the lines spoken one could scarcely guess how deeply shaken la the seat of reason. These Mr. Hampden rendered with fine intelligence a beautiful sense of their poetic splendor and their vailed rhythms.

An actor who haa conquered Shakespeare's vers has mastered the better part of any character. Under repetition and the barber, Mr. Hampden's Macbeth ahould develop into a creation quite on a par with las Hamlet. The Macduff of Albert Brunlng waa vigorous and impasaioned, bringing down the house as Macduff alwaya uoea when adequately rendered. The JUiay Marhath nf illila a reel was marred only at intervals by a foreign accent.

It waa admirably restrained in manner and ltnaglnativtiy errectlve. Of the production as a whole less can be said. As deeply as any modern playwrightmuch more deeply. In fact 1 Shaxeapeare needs a producer. And, aa the type of production familiar to our atage ruins the effect by an excesa of ncenery.

so these pseudo-Elizabethan productions of Th Shakespeare Playhouse ruin It by an entire absence of scenic illusion. The witch acena and th ghost scenes, which Shakespeare had means to render most effect! vu, left th imagination cold even the stirring battle scenes in which the drama culmi-nates. Hamlet without the Prince could be no more futile than Shakespeare's Scottish King without a play. Barnard Gives Plays for Canteen. As a war benefit for the Barnard v.
