"He is very, very similar to Randall Cunningham," Brandt said. "Had he waited, he probably would've been a better player. All quarterbacks get better with the more experience they get. CHIEFS Former New York Jets coach Herman Edwards has reached an oral agreement in principle with Kansas City on a four-year, $12 million dollar contract to become their head coach, ESPN.com reported. Edwards, 51, will receive a raise over the $2 million per year that he was making as Jets coach.

The Chiefs received permission Friday morning to talk with Edwards after the NFL office gave the OK for the Chiefs to compensate the Jets with a fourth-round choice in the 2006 draft. Young ends his career at Texas with a 30-2 record the best in school history. His Rose Bowl performance increased speculation that he would leave school early. The Texas quarterback, who led the Longhorns to their first national championship in 36 years, announced yesterday he would make himself eligible for the April draft.

Young maintained during the season that he would to return for his senior year, but said his Rose Bowl performance put him "over the top." "Hard work has paid off a whole lot," he said. Young was spectacular in Texas' 41-38 Rose Bowl win over top-ranked Southern California on Wednesday, and he would have been a favorite to win the Heis-man Trophy had he decided to return. The versatile quarterback accounted for 467 yards against USC 200 running and 267 passing and ran 8 yards for the winning touchdown with 19 seconds left. Young thanked many people, including his family and coach Mack Brown, who was at the American Football Coaches Association Convention and could not attend yesterday's news conference. He specifically thanked Brown for "helping me become a better man." In a statement, Brown said he met with Young and his family DIGEST Women's group says Paterno should resign A leader from the women's rights group NOW has asked Joe Paterno to resign over comments the Penn State football coach made about an alleged sexual assault.

Joanne Tosti-Vasey the president of the National Organization for Women in Pennsylvania, said yesterday that she was "appalled" by Paterno's comments. Paterno's remarks came a day before the Orange Bowl, when a reporter asked about Florida State linebacker A.J. Nicholson, who was accused of sexual assault and sent home. Paterno replied by talking about past suspensions of Penn State players. He then added: "There's some tough there's so many people gravitating to these kids.

He may not have even known what he was getting into, Nicholson. They knock on the door; somebody may knock on the door; a cute girl knocks on the door. What do you do?" "Geez. I hope thank God they don't knock on my door because I'd refer them to a couple of other rooms," Paterno continued. "But that's too bad.

You hate to see that. I really do. You like to see a kid end up his football career. He's a heck of a football player, by the way; he's a really good football player. And it's just too bad." Tosti-Vasey issued a news release calling for Paterno to apologize and step down.

"We had a jump at the beginning of the game," Zubrus said. "We were playing well and then, just like a couple of games ago, we got into trouble with penalties. Seems like a broken record." Brooks Laich scored a shootout goal for the Capitals, but Luongo made a kick save on Ovechkin and batted away Brian Willsie's shot with his left hand. Heward's slap shot gave Washington a 1-0 lead 19 seconds into the game, and Zubrus got his 100th career goal on a power play to make it 2-0 at 3:57. Stuart Appleby had to go an extra hole to make it three in a row at the Mercedes Championships in Kapalua, Hawaii, making a birdie on the par-5 18th to force a playoff against Vijay Singh, then winning on the same hole with a bunker shot that nearly went in.

Appleby joined Gene Littler in 1955-57 as the only players to win the winners-only tournament three straight times, and none of them was easy. "This one was the hardest," said Appleby, who went from a two-shot lead to a two-shot deficit Sunday before birdieing two of the last four holes for a green into the back bunker, then blasted out and watched the ball tickle over the rim of the cup before settling 2 feet away. Singh's birdie putt stayed right the whole way, and Appleby holed his short putt to win. Asia captured yesterday's play, 5-3, at Amata Spring Country Club. APPLEBY average score in the final round. First baseman Eduardo Perez, the fifth remaining unsigned free agent, has been working on finalizing a contract with the Cleveland Indians.

1 NCAA considers exempt rule change The NCAA would scrap a rule prohibiting men's and women's basketball teams from playing in more than two exempt tournaments in a four-year period under a compromise reached by the Division I Management Council. The proposal, one of about 140 heard during the NCAA convention, will be sent to member schools and conferences for comment before it is considered again in April. Under the plan, the two-in-four rule would be eliminated and schools would be allowed to participate in an event each year, but in the same event only once in four years.
