But it's a great honor to be selected and I'm having fun." Rennert had another relatively calm evening during Thursday's game, making just a few calls.

One call Rennert said had the potential to be sticky, though, was Houston's Billy Hatcher's diving catch tf a line-drive to center field in the second inning. "Those guys can run out there, and there's always the possibility of a trap," he iaid. "If I figure it is going to be a close play, I get out there. But his was clean, an excellent catch." Rennert said having a six-man staff during the post-season is a pleasant relief for the umpires. "There are some definite mechanic changes," he said, "like on the play to center (Hatcher's catch), I wouldn't really have to have gone out there because of the outfield umpires.

"It saves you a lot of running and gives us better angles at plays." Rennert said he doubts that the six-man crew will ever be used during the regular season. "They're always talking money, money, money," Rennert said. "They spend all of these millions of dollars on the players, but not on the umpires. It sure would be nice for us, though, because it cuts down on days at home plate." Rennert said he had his share of talkers at second base Thursday. Hormone abuse problem CHICAGO (AP) The use of male hormones by female athletes is a big problem, and a test should be developed to keep those who have used the substances from competing in the Olympics, a U.S.

Olympic team official says. I "The abuse is worldwide," said Dr. Robert O. Voy, director of sports medicine and science for the United States Olympic Committee. "There is a total ban (on use of the hormones), but there ought to be total testing," he said in a telephone interview from Dallas.

The hormones, in the form of anabolic steroids, are used to in. crease muscle mass. Voy said the problem with steroids is worse than cases of genetic males trying to sneak into women's events in world athletic competition. A Finnish researcher reported in today's Journal of the American Medieal Association that genes alone do not determine who is a woman, and he recommended that the test used to ensure that female Olympic competitors are really women be altered if it is continued. "The procedure is not only inaccurate but also discriminatory, in that it excludes women who should be allowed to participate," writes Dr.

Albert de la Chapelle of the University of Helsinki. MCC Ron Urtvtnefc but his conversation with the Met's Gary Carter was the best. After Carter doubled, he stood at second base and asked Rennert. "How do you explain something like that last questioning the pitching of Houston's Mike Scott, who struck out 14 Met batters. Rennert replied, "He was sharp." Carter said, "It was the best stuff I've ever seen." Rennert quipped, "It must have been, because that's the worst you have ever looked." By overcoming the roaring enthusiasm of the Houston crowd, Rennert said the Mets win means everything.

"The Mets are very happy to go to New York with the series tied," he said. "I think they have the up-perhand going back to Shea. The crowd is wild there, but it gets them going. "And they haven't even begun to score like they can. With Carter and (Keith) Hernandez heating up, they will be tough." Rennert will be at first base Saturday and will be behind the plate Sunday.

West frosh win Jason Jungwirth caught a pair of touchdown passes to lead the Oshkosh West freshman football team to an 18-0 win over Menasha Thursday. Jungwirth caught passes of 12 and 8 yards from quarterback Ryan Bittner for scores. West is 3-3 while Menasha fell to 1-5.
