"I think I was asked to join this board in an effort to form the proper blend," Schirra said. "There has to be balance on a board and I think Kimberly-Clark has an excellent blend of people. "When I was visiting the plants I saw a high level of morale and one man came up and told me it was good to have someone in the engineering field here. I think I can put my engineering skills to work. "I think I can play a role in product technology.

I'm very comfortable with technology and I think you will see how technology was used when some of the new products come out." Schirra said he was impressed with the way K-C was meeting environmental standards and was offering equal opportunity to people. He said he was on the advisory board for the National Park Service and started his own environmental engineering business, so he knows about environmental standards. He also said he knew about business and technology after being with Johns Manville and watching the transfer of technology in and out of that corporation. Schirra, who graduated from the Naval Academy in 1945, was the only astronaut to fly in the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, logging a total of 295 hours and 14 minutes in space during three history making flights. "I became a celebrity by doing well," Schirra said, "but I was also well prepared to do the task.

I expect to carry that over to Clark," he said. "It is a well-established and well-respected company. "When I was with the space agency we were always looking ahead, and I think I can do that with this company. The wood-related industries are always looking ahead, unlike one board of directors I sat on with a bank that always looked behind. "I think I was brought on board because I can look ahead and will express my opinions.

I was known as a 'testy astronaut' and a test astronaut because I speak my mind." Schirra, who was on the board of directors of a bank and was vice president for the Johns Mansville currently manages his own consulting firm, Schirra Enterprises of Morrison, Colo. He has directorships with Rocky Mountain Airlines, Electromedics Corp. and Watt Count Marketing. As a member of the K-C board, he will receive an annual retainer of $16,000 and $600 per meeting fee, plus out-of-pocket expenses. As a member of the K-C board of directors, he is expected to attend the six annual meetings and serve on public interest and audit committees of the board.

He said his role as an outside director is to learn as much as he can about Kimberly-Clark, and by being on the auditing committee he will be able to see quickly how the corporation is doing. Being on the public interest committee will help him to find out how the public perceives K-C. He said he would like to visit Kimberly-Clark plants to learn more about the operation. Because he has taken on this new job he will be 5-PC. CONTEMPORARY 36 in.

"I think my job with Kimberly-Clark will also be a sounding board for the people who work here." Schirra said that he visited at Kimberly-Clark when he arrived and people were already talking to him about their jobs and how things are going.
