James E. Rogers, at Fort McClellan. By THOMAS CHAMBERS Northwestern Staff Writer The first woman jet pilot on the first civilian jet aerobatic team. In the world of aviation, Debbie Gary is the first woman to do a lot of things. Miss Gary, 27, from Newton, Kansas, moves almost as fast on the ground as she does in the air; making arrangements for the next flight, or discussing her plane with other enthusiasts.

She is in Oshkosh for the Experimental Aircraft Association convention at Wittman Airport. The jet she pilots is called the BD-5 and is manufactured by Bede Aircraft, Inc. of Newton. It is very small, almost as long as a foreign car, and squeezes its pilot very closely in the cockpit. Bede hopes to manufacture the plane on a mass basis and sell it to the general public after the Federal Aviation Administration approves the design.
