It took a little magic for Mike McLaughlin to find Victory Lane on the Busch Grand National circuit, and when he got there he was at a loss to explain how he got his nickname. The 38-year-old driver from Waterloo, N.Y. known as Magic Shoes, "When I first started racing on dirt in upstate New York there was A.J.

Slideways Jumping Jack Johnson and I was Magic Shoes," he said after winning the GM Goodwrench-Delco Battery 200 Saturday at Dover Downs International Speedway. Ironically, the real magic shoes a stout set of tires nearly gave the race to Doug Heveron. Also seeking his first series victory, Heveron was in command of the $277,857 event when he blew his engine with 17 laps remaining. McLaughlin started fifth in a Chevrolet Monte Carlo, led 44 laps prior to Heveron's misfortune and was not challenged after that. Edgerton's Rich Bickle finished 16th, and Alleton's Robbie Reiser was 17th.

Hockey National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman is taking the part of the New Jersey Devils in its complaint with the state, saying the team has raised "serious questions" about whether its landlord has lived up to its part of the lease. Bettman told the Hackensack, N.J., newspaper he would be willing to help mediate the dispute between the Devils and the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority. The Devils have alleged 13 different violations of the lease. Golf Tiger Woods came up short in a bid for the individual NCAA title, then missed a putt in a team playoff as Oklahoma State took the national championship from Stanford. Woods, the reigning U.S.

Amateur champion, shot a 71 Saturday on Ohio State's Scarlet Course to complete four rounds at 2-under-par 286. That was three shots back of Auburn's Chip Spratlin. Stanford got into a playoff with Oklahoma State, but lost when the Cowboys made two birdies on the first playoffhole. Auto racing Five-time Baja champion Danny Hamel was killed Saturday in Mexico when his motorcycle collided with the car of a motorist who strayed onto the race course, Hamel's teammate said. Hamel, 23, was 10 miles into the Baja 500 when a car turned suddenly onto the paved section of the race.

Track Track and field's world governing body is considering changing the times of the Olympic 200-meter semifinals and 400 final to accommodate Michael Johnson. If the change is made, it would give Johnson who wants to double three hours between races instead of 1:45, the time difference on the current schedule for July 31. George Mason's Diane Guthrie-Gresham shattered Jackie Joyner-Kersee's NCAA meet record in the heptathlon, finishing with 6,527 points Saturday for her second consecutive title. Boxing Heavyweight champion George Foreman must give challenger Axel Schulz of Germany a rematch or forfeit his title, the International Boxing Federation ruled Saturday. Foreman beat Schulz on a controversial decision April 12, and said he will not fight Schulz again.
