Another Matra team member, Geerard Larrouse of France, sped around the circuit in 1:43.91 for an average speed of 117 flat. Larrousse and countryman Henri Pesca-rolo have accounted for Matra's four victories in the first nine races of the series this year. Jean-Pierre Bel-toise, another Frenchman, is Cevert's copilot. A victory Saturday is worth 20 points and second is 15.

CHICAGO (AP) Bobby Bonds doubled twice and scored each time on singles by Garry Maddox, helping Juan Marichal and the San Francisco Giants to a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs Friday. Bonds opened the game with a double, triggering a bree-run first inning that saw Maddox and Gary Matthews both drive in runs and another score on an error. Marichal, after working out of a first-inning jam in which Chicago scored one run, held the Cubs scoreless until Billy Williams hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning. Schneider said the incident occurred in Anaheim, Wednesday night in the clubhouse office of manager Ken Aspromonte following the Indians victory over the California Angels. The sportswriter said Aspromonte and first base coach Rocky Colavito witnessed the incident. Schneider said Lutz was angered over stories of fraternization among the Tribe's first and third base coaches and opposing first and third basemen. Nick Mileti, the Indians chief executive, indicated he was "very concerned" about the incident and would comment after meeting with Aspromonte and both coaches. the Cubs put two more runners on base with just one out, but Marichal struck out Carmen Fanzone and got Paul Popovich on a grounder.

Woolley resigned and was demoted from head coach by the school board when news of the altered transcripts became public. Earlier this month, the board voted 4-3 to reinstate Woolley as head coach, and eight assistant coaches promptly resigned in protest. Douglas said five of the resigned coaches would be given an opportunity to get their jobs back. He would not comment on why the other coaches were not allowed to return.

i STORE Pedwin ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Ryan needs only consistency to walk throagh the record books," declared California Angels General Manager Harry Dalton after his pitcher narrowly missed two no-hitters in a row. He also could use a little better hitting behind him and a little better luck. Still Ryan feels he has a chance to hurl a third no-hitter during the 1973 season, a feat never accomplished in major league baseball. The 26-year-old righthander from Alvin, will be on the American league ATLANTA (UPI) Darrell Evans is pleased, and even a little surprised, about his home run prowess this season, but he'd rather talk about his improved defensive play.

"When I came up to the majors, I was strictly an offense thinker," said the 26-year-old Atlanta Braves third baseman. "But, it gradually dawned on me that I'd never be a whole ballpalyer until I learned to play defense." The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Californian became Atlanta's regular third baseman midway through the 1971 season after slick-fielding Clete Boyer left the team following a personal duel with then General Manager Paul Richards. "I'd always figured I'd make it with my bat," said Evans. "But, with Boyer here, I'd already switched to left field." No Illusions Evans is the first to admit that he was a far-from-pol-ished third baseman when he took over Boyer's spot, "and the contrast made my play more obvious. A Clete Boyer or a Brooks Robinson only comes along once every 10.

years or so. 1 have no illusions about my playing third like that." Evans has become a proficient third baseman and his concentration on defense hasn't hurt his offense one whit. A .242 hitter with 12 homers his first half season, Evans hit .254 with 19 homers in 72. This year, playing in the shadow of Hank Aaron's pursuit of Babe Ruth's career home run record, Evans shares the major league home run lead with 21 and paces the Braves in runs batted in with 65. "I really didn't figure that I'd have that many home runs by this time of year," but it looks like I'll probably hit more than 40 this year if I don't slack off and I never counted on that." Out Of The Way Evans helped himself this season by getting his two-week active duty Marine Reserve commitment out of the way before the season began.

"Losing two weeks in the middle of last season was certainly a hindrance to my baseball," said Evans. "I was going pretty good, then I had to refind my touch when I returned from camp." 1973 ROOM.
