Evonne, Billie Jean In Wimbledon Final Lolich Receives Earliest Shower Mpif-- wq kfcli WIMBLEDON, England (UPI) will be the vs. the reigning queen in the women's singles final at the Wimbledon lawn tennis championships Friday with three-time winner Billie Jean King and defending champion Evonne Goolagong renewing their center court rivalry. Mrs. King, of Long Beach, played like a short odds favorite Wednesday in defeating Rosie Casals of San Francisco, 6-2, 6-4, while Australia's Miss Goolagong came from behind to beat Chris Evert of Ft. Lauderdale, 4-6-3, 6-4 by turning the center court into a giant chess board.

It was an especially heartbreaking loss for Miss Evert, who won the first set 6-4 and was leading in the second 3-0 before losing her poise. Age Difference? Mrs. King reached the final for the seventh time in 12 vis its and it is hard to believe she still is only 28, eight years her. opponent's senior. For the Sydney-based Miss Goolagong it will be her second final in three attempts.

She beat Billie Jean 6-4, 6-4 in the semis last year before upsetting compatriot Margaret Court in three sets in the final. The long-awaited center court duel between Miss Goolagong and little Miss Evert, the 17-year-old Florida sweetheart on her first trip to England, lived up to its advanced billing for drama and tension, even if both girls made a lot of unforced errors. In the end Evonne's three years of big time experience proved the key because Chris lost her poise. She was unable to come up with a big game when she needed it even though she had the lead in both the second and third sets. Rallies Against Chris After the first set and a half, during which she averaged three errors to one winner, Evonne's game clicked into top gear as she began to VSfWHV.

1 KANSAS CITY (UPI)-Fred Patek scored twice and knocked in another run Wednesday night, driving Mickey Lolich to his' earliest departure of the season and leading the Kansas City Royals to an 8-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Lefty Paul Splittorff allowed only three hits in boosting his record to 8-4 as the Royals pulled to the .500 level for the first time since April. The Tigers, who have lost four games in a row, fell two games behind Baltimore in the American League East. Patek's one-out single in the sixth scored the Royals' fourth run and forced Lolich, who had won six straight from Kansas City over the past two seasons, out of the game. Lolich's previous shortest stint this season had been six innings.

Patek led off the first with a double. Amos Otis beat out a bunt and when first baseman Paul Jata overthrew Tony Taylor, Patek scored. Otis stole second and rode home on the first of Richie Scheinblum's two doubles. The win gave the streaking Orioles an 18-8 record since they started the drive on June 7. They moved into first place Tuesday night. Both girls helped to make it a memorable match for the capacity 15,000 crowd on a dull, overcast day. The match opened with both girls dropping their opening serves. Evonne was broken again for Chris to lead 4-3 but she was unable to put the set away when serving in the ninth game and dropped it at love. But she immediately hit back, wrapping it up on her second set point when Evonne hit a backhand over the baseline. Chris broke for 2-0 and then produced a love game to stand 3-0 in the second set but this was the signal for a Goolagong revival.

"I played it like Viv (Edwards) told me," she said afterwards, adding: "this is the first time he has mapped out prematch tactics for me." Edwards has coached and traveled with Evonne since he discovered her as a 12-year-old in the New South Wales town of Barellan. Evonne strung together five winning games to stand 5-3 and then broke Chris for the third straight time in the set to 30, evening the match at a set all when Chris thumped one of her double-fisted backhands over the baseline chalk. Seven Straight Evonne made it seven winning games in a row when she 6erved a love game to open the third set but the poker-faced Chris, the queen of the baseline retrieves, broke ahead to 15 in the third game. She could not maintain her advantage and was broken for 2-2 and the next two games then went against service before Chris, who was 30-40, held for 4-4. Evonne made it 5-4 and for the first time in the tournament Chris had reached a crisis.

The crowd waited with baited breath to see if she could even the match again but in the end Evonne prevailed. Chris played a drop shot but Evonne came through with a placement, 0-15; Evonne made a forehand placement after drawing Chris to the net, O-30; Chris netted a forehand, 0-40 and three match points to Evonne; Evonne hit an unreturnable backhand volley game, set and match. The crowd stood and cheered for five minutes. The girls shook hands; the photographers descended upon Evonne and Chris, a lone figure by the net, towelled herself and pondered about what might have been. Chris' Consolation But Chris is only 17 while Evonne is 20 and the Florida girl will have her chances in the future.

She had the consolation of making it all the way to both the semifinals in her first shots at both Forest Hills and Wimbledon. The match between Mrs. King and her former doubles partner lacked the high drama of the other semifinal, but it was full of good strokes and showed the winner at her best. Billie Jean has the strokes to match the best brain in women's tennis today and there was little 23-year-old Rosie could do against an opponent who ran her score to 19-1 in meetings over the past two years, despite a mid-set lapse by Mrs. King in the second.

American's signature on it. No such document has yet been presented to the Russian world champion, but Dr. Euwe said he was satisfied that it would be forthcoming. Fischer presented an apology of sorts Wednesday when he broke his silence with a statement regretting the delay of the match. Fischer said it was not Spassky's fault that the match had been delayed and said he "respected grandmaster Spassky as a player and man." Russian officials said the statement was expected to satisfy Spassky if delivered to him with Fischer's signature attached.

Dr. Euwe already fulfilled two other Soviet demands Wednesday night when he issued a condemnation of Fischer's behavior in failing to turn up in time and also admitted that he himself had violated the FIDE rules by granting a postponement of the first match.
