On his 22-yard scoring run, Jackson set a new single-season rushing record at Auburn, breaking the mark of 1,315 set by James Brooks in 1980; the 22-yards put Jackson at 1,320. At the game's end, his season rushing total stood at 1,402, about a flat 200 yards per game average. Mississippi St.

Once again senior tailback Bo Jackson gave No. 6 Auburn its offensive punch, but it took a strong defense and the booming punts of Louis Colbert for the Tigers to hold off Mississippi State 21-9 on Saturday. "It wasn't a pretty win," said Jackson, who rushed for 169 yards and two touchdowns, including a 22-yard scoring run that put Auburn ahead after trailing 6-0. Auburn Coach Pat Dye agreed: "It's been frustrating.

We weren't able to hammer out anything today. This is a good football team that has now become ordinary. "I'd hate to think where we would be without our defense," Dye said. He also said Colbert showed why he ranks among the top punters in the nation. "He helped put Mississippi State in poor field position most of the Dye said.

"We had some opportunities early to get some points in addition to the field goals, but Auburn stopped us," said Bulldogs Coach Emory Bellard. "Out of four scoring opportunities, we came out with only three field goals." Jackson's 22-yard touchdown run sparked a 14-point outburst by Auburn with less than two minutes left in the half. His 4-yard scoring run in the third quarter gave Auburn room to hold on for the victory. The victory in the Southeastern Conference battle lifted Auburn's record to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the SEC, while the Bulldogs fell to 5-3 and 0-3 in the league. Mississippi State quarterback Don Smith moved the Bulldogs in bursts but could hot sustain a drive into the end zone, with Mississippi State settling for Artie Cosby field-goals of 37, 27 and 37 yards.

The first two field goals put Mississippi State up 6-0. But with four minutes left in the half, Auburn moved 70 yards in seven plays, with Jackson running 22 yards for the score that put Auburn ahead for good. Jackson's score fired up the Tigers. Auburn got the ball back less than a minute later and scored on quarterback Pat Washington's 29-yard pass to Freddy Weygand that made it 14-6 at the half. Auburn made it 21-6 earlier in the third quarter on a 72-yard drive highlighted by a 40-yard run by Jackson.

Georgia attacked the nation's fourth-best defense against the run for three rushing touchdowns, and Greg Waters led a big-play defense that helped carry the Bulldogs to a 26-6 Southeastern Conference football victory over Kentucky on Saturday. The Bulldogs never trailed after quarterback James Jackson scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter, and they built their lead to 26-0 in the third when Tim Worley ran 9 yards for one 'score and Wayne Johnson 27 for another.

Georgia, 5-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the SEC, also got a pair of field goals of 41 and 26 yards from Steve Crumley in downing Kentucky for the eighth year in a row and lifting their home-field record in the 1980s to 32-3. Waters had three quarterback sacks in the game and also dumped two runners for losses as Kentucky was unable to take advantage of excellent field position. The Wildcats failed to score on five drives that started in Bulldog territory. Kentucky, 4-3 and 1-2, avoided a shutout when Bill Ransdell engineered an 80-yard drive that ended Lt JOE DUDEK of Plymouth State, a Division 3 school, broke Walter Pay-ton's NCAA career touchdown record and tied Wilbert Montgomery's overall collegiate record of 70 touchdowns, set in National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics play. Dudek scored a career-high five TDs on runs of 16, 58, 10, 35 and 32 yards.

Payton scored 66 TDs at Jackson State. WILLIE TOTTEN, record-setting quarterback for Mississippi Valley State, threw eight touchdown passes, including six in the first half, in his team's 59-40 victory over Texas Southern. Totten didn't even tie his own NCAA Division 1-AA record for most TD passes in a game, though he threw nine last year against Kentucky State when he had 56 for the season. TOP-RANKED IOWA'S quarterback, Chuck Long, tied a Big Ten record by throwing six touchdown passes in a 49-10 win over Northwestern. Long had 19 completions in 26 attempts for 399 yards.

SYRACUSE WIDE RECEIVER Scott Schwedes caught a 31 -yard TD pass, threw a 31-yard TD pass, and returned a punt 54 yards for a TD to beat Temple. BACKUP ARKANSAS OB Mark Calcagni, coming in after the starter was injured, completed six of 1 1 for 167 yards and two TDs and had 13 carries for 95 yards and a TD in a win against Houston. VMI QUARTERBACK Al Comer scored on a quarterback keeper as time expired, then pitched to James Wright for a two-point conversion for a 39-38 win over William Mary. VMI's final drive began on its own 18 with 3:15 left, and Comer completed two fourth-down passes to keep it going. He scored three TDs rushing.

AIR FORCE'S Scott Thomas returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown in his team's 37-15 win over Utah, thus becoming the fourth player in NCAA history to return a punt, kickoff and interception for scores in one season. Watching from the opposite bench was Utah's Erroll Tucker, who had become the third player to accomplish that feat just a week earlier. 2 2. MARC BUONICONTI, the youngest son of former Miami Dolphin linebacker Nick Buoniconti, was critically injured against East Tennessee State University. Buoniconti, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound sophomore linebacker for The Citadel, was injured while trying to tackle East Tennessee State running back Herman Jacobs midway through the first quarter.

Citadel players said Buoniconti was hit from the side and back as his head struck the artificial playing surface at Memorial Center. He was in a Johnson City, hospital in critical condition with a neck injury. ROUT OF THE WEEK: Unbeaten Findlay (Ohio) scored 48 points in the second quarter to roll to an 82-3 victory over Defiance in the Hoosier-Buckeye Conference. Findlay is 6-0, and Defiance is 1-6. Findlay rushed for 589 yards on 65 attempts.

Defiance gained 53 yards on 37 carries. MISSOURI ENSURED it would return to the top spot in the Bottom Ten rankings of the nation's worst teams with its 20-17 loss to visiting Kansas State. Missouri and Kansas State were both 0-6 going into the game, with Kansas State ranked first and Missouri second in the Bottom Ten poll. Kansas State scored on two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to keep Missouri's record perfect under first-year coach Woody Widenhofer. CENTRAL FLORIDA allowed 771 yards total offense by Stephen F.

Austin, losing 59-24. Todd Whitten passed for 407 yards and six touchdowns, and the 6-1 Lumberjacks also ran for 354 yards. Central Florida, 2-5, lost its fifth straight game. NOTRE DAME COACH Gerry Faust, explaining why his team changed from blue jerseys to green at halftime despite its 27-0 lead over Southern Cat: "We felt it would stir up the crowd. It's the people under the jerseys that matter.

You still have to play the game." SOUTHERN CAL COACH Ted Tollner on the uniform switch: "We were responsible for our own embarrassment. The green uniforms basically had no effect on our team." Asked if he thought it was embarrassment heaped upon embarrassment, Tollner replied: "I think they planned it that way, and I'D leave it at that." RICHMOND COACH Dal Shealy, on Ns decision to go for a tying field goal on the game's final play against Rutgers: "I just didn't want to lose the balkjame. Some people say a tie is like kissing your sister. Well, I love my sister and I don't mind kissing her." He didn't get the kiss, though the field goal was no good, and Richmond tost 20-17. "Kent Austin clearly demonstrated what he means to the Ole Miss football team with his leadership and execution on the field," Brewer said after the senior passed for three touchdowns and engineered a fourth to give the Rebels their first SEC victory of the season. Austin, returning to the lineup for the first time in 2lA games, teamed with J.R. Ambrose on two of the scoring passes as the Rebels improved their record to 3-3-1 by defeating the Commodores before an estimated homecoming crowd of 35,500. Vanderbilt, 2-5-1 and 0-3-1 in the SEC, was kept in check by an Ole Miss offense that trapped freshman quarterback Tim Richardson in the end zone twice and caused him to fumble on two other occasions.
