But, my, oh my, don't you know his 200th victory was the most remote thing from Bobby Bowden's mind here Saturday night! More on FSU-Virginia Tech, pages 6-7B All the way, his unbeaten, No. 2-ranked Florida State football team struggled before finally putting down Virginia Tech 39-28 before 60,301 unbelieving fans. It was not until 3:59 remained on the Campbell Stadium clock could FSU partisans breathe free, and then not for long.

Trailing a bare 32-28, Tech was about to get a first down at FSU's 23 when cornerback Errol McCor-vey sprung his fumble rumble. Able under new college rules to advance an opponents' bobble past the line of scrimmage, McCorvey picked up the loose ball and sped 77 yards for the touchdown that really did it But, hey, were it not for the heroics of fellow cornerback Terrell Buckley, FSU likely never would have been in position to win. In the final moments of the third quarter, he scored on a 57-yard interception run. Early in the game, he had returned a punt 45 yards. Then, quite late, after McCorvey's dramatics, he stymied a final Tech threat with an end-zone interception and 41-yard return.

FAMU pulled close, trailing 30-24 going into the fourth quarter after two touchdown runs in the third by Lincoln High's Pat Reddick. But early in the fourth, the Hornets pulled away. On second down and seven, Jones hit Brooks on the Hornet 40-yard line. FAMU free safety William Carroll flew at Brooks trying to hit him out of bounds, but Brooks shook it off and raced the final 60 yards for touchdown. Overall, Alabama State rolled up 535 yards compared to 406 for FAMU. It was the most points allowed going back to Alcorn State's 51-14 win in 1984's Orange Blossom Classic. FAMU's defense fell 26 yards shy of tying its game high for yards allowed.

The University of Tampa rolled up 561 yards in 1969. In four games, FAMU has been outscored 116-110 and has given up at least 20 points in all three of its losses. "We've got a long way to go to get back on par," FAMU coach Rattlers are 1-3 after 44-32 loss By David Lee Simmons Democrat staff writer MOBILE, Ala. In the final analysis, Florida defense just couldn't keep up with the Joneses. The Jones that ran, the Jones that threw.

The Jones that taunted and almost single-handedly tainted the first half of a very frustrating Rattler football season. With every play by Alabama State quarterback Ricky Jones, FAMU sank deeper and deeper until it settled into a 44-32 loss here Saturday night before 20,000 at Ken Riley said. He had help from quarterback Tony Ezell, who completed 19 of 33 passes for 264 yards, one touchdown and one interception. However, for the second that was more than happy to try and expose FAMU's inexperienced secondary. And unfortunately for FAMU, three out of four is too bad. But Ricky Jones didn't stop there. He beat FAMU every which way he could.

And with that loss, the Rattlers are now faced with a tremendous, regrouping task at a time when they were hoping to gather momentum. FAMU is now 1-3 heading into its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schedule. Alabama State evened its record at 2-2-1.

This fourth week of the Gator football season, the victim was SEC opponent Mississippi State. The score: 34-21 Gators. The audience: 72,943 at Florida Field.

The tone: bizarre. "It certainly. was a funny game, but we were glad to win it," said Spurrier, the Gator coach. What made it strange was that despite a Gator defensive effort that held Mississippi State to 135 total yards, the Bulldogs still scored three touchdowns. Two came on fumble recoveries returns of 34 yards by Marc Woodard and 15 yards by Keith Joseph.

This is the first year in college football that you can advance that fumble, and Mississippi State must practice it because they do it very well," Spurrier said. But Spurrier's team did a lot of things very well, too. The defensive report card nine Bulldog first downs, eight Bulldog punts, two interceptions by Florida's Will White. "That's unbelievable," Spurrier said. "I'd say it was a typical performance by our defense." The offensive report card 567 total yards, 32 first downs, a 143-yard rushing effort from freshman Errict Rhett, an average of 6 yards per play, and 351 yards passing and three touchdown passes from quarterback Shane Matthews.

But there were mistakes, too. Matthews threw interceptions to Reggie Stewart and Jeff Easter-wood, and the Gators fumbled twice. There was a breakdown in Please see GATORS, 8B nament director. "Dozens and dozens of calls every day. And I can assure you, that's a first" The LPGA Centel Classic, which begins Thursday, replaces a men's PGA Tour tournament, which has been held in Tallahassee since 1969.

But the men's event, which was dropped when the Centel Corp. chose to sponsor the men's Western Open, was never more than a minor stop on the PGA Tour. The 1990 Centel Classic, on the other hand, is one of the two richest tournaments on the LPGA Tour. 'Along with the already-played Mazda Classic, the Centel Classic is offering a purse of $1 million. The winner will collect $150,000.

That makes it very popular with the golfers. Every one of this year's top 50 money winners will be here this week. "Last year (as a men's event), I was happy for us to go to $750,000.
