Lincoln and Niceville were tied at 19 in team points after the singles competition. The Trojans' doubles team of Brian Schumacher and Miles Hughes defeated Gulf Breeze 6-2, 6-0 to put Lincoln up 20-19. A Niceville victory over Watts and Mangan would have split the title between the two schools. Watts and Mangan took the first set easily, 6-2.

They were helped by Wilson, who forced Niceville to forfeit one game due to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for slinging his racket. But the Trojan pair was helped more by Watts' long ground strokes and Mangan's aggressive play at the net. "Richard did his part, that's for sure," a jubilant Watts said. "And after Wilson started missing shots early, we started picking on him. After we started in on him, he started losing his confidence." "We served real well," Mangan said.

Sherman, the seed, had knocked off the top seed on her way to the title. Friday, she put away Capelouto relatively easily. That match was by far the most colorful on Friday. Midway through the first set, Capelouto stopped the match to ask for a line judge, an unusual request for high-school tennis. Players customarily call the lines.

"That was the first time I ever had to ask for a judge," Capelouto said. "But we were arguing over some shots, and I thought we needed judges." Indeed, the two players often exchanged more verbal shots than tennis shots. At one point, Sherman questioned Capelouto 's call on a shot and said, "You know that ball was a foot inside the line. If you have to cheat to win, just say so." Soon after that, Capelouto called for the judge. "I didn't like that," Capelouto said of Sherman's remarks.

"It really began to get to me some." "It didn't bother me at all," Sherman said. A District 1-AAA tennis title for their Lincoln team depended upon Watts and Mangan defeating Nice-ville in the tournament's final match. When Watts and Mangan put the final touches on a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Niceville's Matt Stanley and Brian Wilson, the Trojans had their double-dip of success. As the final point became history, Watts grabbed Mangan, gave him a big hug and shouted an emphatic, "Yes!" The victory by Mangan and Watts, and the resulting one point, gave Lincoln a 21-19 edge over Ni-ceville for the boys' team title. Panama City Bay took the girls' championship with 24 points.
