WORTH NOTING Hamburger Helper helping with Russian food woes Russian food supplies have been tight the 1 past couple of years, so they are trying one of America's meal stretchers. General Mills ex- ported 2.28 million boxes of Hamburger Helper' and Tuna Helper to Moscow in December for distribution in the Commonwealth of Indepen-; dent States. This export sale was reported in General Mills' Review magazine for shareholders and I employees in an article about the company's export businesses. Why Hamburger Helper? "It's a good way to stretch meat supplies," said Betty Crocker I spokeswoman Pam Becker.

"And we hear some people stretch it so far they don't have meat or tuna in it." From Democrat staff and news services transportation. Shaw said that under the current plan, the chairman handles most of the issues directly. He said the job titles for the vice chairmen haven't been decided on. "We want a lean, mean organization that can react and fight our battles," Shaw said of his proposal. Small businesses to be recognized with award Do you know a Leon County business that is doing a bang-up job? Then nominate the company for a Small Business of the Year award in the annual Chamber of Commerce competition.

Dena Strickland, a chamber vice president said the group would take nominations for the 1993 competition between Feb. 1 and March 31. Nomination forms will be available from the Chamber starting Feb. 1, she said. A committee will review the nominations and select winners in eight categories.

The awards will be presented at a May 13 banquet The categories include: Three separate categories for companies that have been in business for at least three years and who have under 10 employees, those who have between 10 and 49 employees and those who have between 50 and 99 employees. Also, there are three separate categories for companies in the same size ranges that have been in operation less than three years. Finally, Strickland said the group will honor a Tallahassee company that does most of its business outside Leon County and also the Small Business Advocate of the Year. Delta adds flight from Tallahassee to Atlanta A week after a Fort Lauderdale no-frills airline announced new Tallahassee jet service, Delta Air Lines on Monday said it was adding a jet flight from Tallahassee to Atlanta.

Kay McCormick, Delta's Tallahassee marketing manager, said the new flight will start April 4 and will use a Boeing 737 jet with 107 seats. With the added service, Delta will offer six Board picks Golub as chief executive NEW YORK Ending weeks of turmoil, struggling American Express Co. said Monday that James Robinson III would remain indefinitely as chairman, reversing a pledge to step down after 15 years atop the financial-services conglomerate. American Express promoted Harvey Golub to chief executive, succeeding Robinson in that post in an apparent compromise by a board divided over appointing the blunt-spoken Golub to lead a company with an image crafted largely on status. The company also said Robinson would take over its Shearson Lehman Brothers unit with a likely goal of spinning off the brokerage as a separate publicly held company.

In perhaps the day's most surprising move, Howard Clark Shearson's former chairman and chief executive, was demoted to vice chairman of the brokerage. AREA BRIEFS Chamber approves chairman's plan Chamber of Commerce Chairman Frank Shaw won approval from the group's board of directors Monday for a plan to add as many as eight members to the Chamber's executive committee. The executive committee, which now has eight members, recommends policy changes to the board. Shaw won the approval at the board's regularly scheduled Chamber meeting. He said he wants to appoint vice-chairmen for a number of areas of Chamber activity in an effort to help members communicate more quickly with the board.

Under the proposal, Shaw said, members could make comments to the executive most responsible for the area about which they were concerned. The vice-chairmen would run Chamber committees in areas such as membership services, drugs and growth management and chain owned by the company, will share in the settlement "The company is pleased the court accepted the settlement," said Shoney's spokesman John Van Mol. He said Shoney's for the past two or three years has taken steps to end racial discrimination so the settlement will just continue those activities. Expenses included $770,000 to advertise the settlement in newspapers, generating 20,000 requests for claim forms, primarily from un-hired job applicants, by a Jan. 11 deadline.

Employees and former employees automatically will be sent claim forms. Those who have had address changes should notify plaintiffs' co-counsel Terry Warren in Tallahassee by calling toll-free 1-(800)-950-1556, Goldstein said. Lawyers for both sides and an arbitrator appointed by U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson will decide whether claims are valid and the amounts paid. Criteria will include length of employment and the type and severity of discrimination or harassment The plaintiffs had alleged the company illegally limited the number or percentage of blacks employed at some restaurants, ordering at least one manager to fire blacks to maintain the limit They also charged restaurants in black communities had all-black or nearly all-black staffs with the reverse the case in white areas.

Shoney's also allegedly hired blacks primarily for the lowest-paying positions, while management and professional jobs went almost entirely to whites. PENSACOLA A federal judge Monday approved a $105-million settlement described as the largest of its type in a racial discrimination suit against Shoney's Inc. The Nashville, restaurant company agreed Nov. 3 to the settlement in a class-action suit It was filed four years ago by nine black former employees from Pen-sacola, Tallahassee, Marianna and Panama City. Legal fees, court costs and expenses brought the total to $132.5 million, more than any other settlement for a racial employment discrimination case against a private employer, said plaintiffs' lawyer Barry Goldstein.

He said the impact on new employment opportunities for blacks with Shoney's and other companies may be greater than the amount of the settlement "Shoney's has gotten the word and I think they have changed drastically," Goldstein said. "Other companies ought to look up and see they can be hit with a nine-figure award and make sure they are in compliance with the fair employment law." Goldstein estimated about 40,000 workers, former employees and applicants for jobs at Shoney's and Captain D's, another restaurant We're not sure who has the best quotes on the 190E.
