A farm hand who was em ployed on the place is missing, end the entire countryside is being hunted by hundreds of farmers.

The motive Is not yet apparent, as It Is not known whether robbers had been Invited to the place by reports of large sums of money hidden on the premises. Baby Die, Too. The baby was not wounded as badly as the others, but died just as help arrived. The police suspect a farm hand who was discharged a week ago. Neigh bors declare a fortune teller, ten days ago, warned Ehepard that within a fortnight his entire family would be wiped out by an Insane murderer.

Shepard was a breeder of poultry and also conducted a kitchen farm. He always had a large amount of money around the house. Macomb, 111. Walter S. Farmer, prominent merchant of Colches ter, Ind, Friday was indicted on a charge that he is responsible for four fires which burned one-quarter of the business section of Colchester. Farmer furnished bonds signed by prominent Colchester and Macomb men. Woman Would Be.M.

East St. Louis. Twenty-seven families were rendered homeless by a fire that late the other day gutted the plant of the General Roofing company and, driven by a high wind, communi cated to and destroyed 27 cottages in the vicinity. It is estimated that the total loss will aggregate $150,000. town wag partly destroyed by fire.

The Presbyterian church and two schoolhousea were burned. Mrs. Wiley, wife of the Presbyterian minister, and her small child were seriously Injured. ILLINOIS MINERS RESUME WORK Tollers Vote to Accept Contract After Six Weeks' Idleness. Springfield.

Wor was resumed the other day in all the coal mines in the state which were in condition to do so after six weeks' idleness. The vote on the proposition to ac cept the operators' proposal of the scale of 1906 was announced at the miners' headquarters the same day the men returned to work. Addison Brown, a dentist of Champaign, and the Chambers Shea Automobile company in this city are defendants in a $6,000 damage suit brought bv A. G. Woodbury, a busi ness man of Danville, who says the de. fendants were riding in an automobile which struck him last New Year's day, breaking one of his arms and knock ing him unconscious. Beardstown. The will of the late William Huppers, who died here, has been admitted to probate. Man's Rescuer Killed. Robinson. Prof. Cockerell stepped on a live wire, which had been blown down during the storm, and escaped with a slight injury. While he was endeavoring to remove the wire, John Fox, 23 years old, came along and in aiding him became entangled in the wire with one foot and fell, entangling the other.

Alton. William Rolloff, a plasterer of Upper Alton, fell from a scaffold into a running engine at the Luer packing plant and was instantly killed. To Divide $1,000,000 Estate.

Peoria. Mrs. Rosa Jack McGonlgle of Chicago, daughter of the late E. H. Jack of tHs city, filed a partition suit asking that the estate of her father be divided among the heirs.

The estate is valued at $1,000,000. Says She Filled Pies with Pint. Danville. Alleging that his wife attempted to kill him by feeding him pies and cakes which were seasoned with pins and needles. Thomas Atkinson has filed suit for divorce in the circuit court here.

Threatening Letters Are Sent to CoaJ Operator. Pana. Warren Penwell of the Pen- well Coal company received a letter through the mails threatening his home with destruction unless he placed t'JiO under a rock in Linwood cemetery, and dire results were of fered if he Informed the police. As result of the letter Jessa Waller, young man of Pana was confined in the city Jail charged with being the originator of the missive. Waller was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Frank Cheney and Chief of Police Spears at the cemetery at a late hour at night and brought to Pana.

The following is the letter received by Mr. Penwell: Mr. Penwell: Put $500 under the rock in the southeast corner of the East graveyard by the corner of the fence Monday night or we blow your house up. Tell the police and we blow it anyway. rt Pana.

Jesse Waller, who. It is al leged, attempted to extort $500 from W7arren Penwell through blackmail, waived his preliminary hearing and was bound over to the grand Jury In the sum of $1,000. Failing to secure a bondsman he was taken to the coun ty jail. $100,000 IN SIGHT; PAUPER DIES. Inmate of Illinois Poorhouse Succumbs on Verge of Wealth.

Freeport. After 20 years la the county poorhouse, Johnnie Jenks, an aged Irishman, died when a fortune of $100,000 recently willed to him was about to be turned over. Jenks proved to be the nearest rela tive to Mrs. Lucy Millets, who died several months ago in San Francisco and left him her entire estate. It was with difficulty that Jenks was found by California attorneys.

The preliminary steps in the transfer of the property had been taken when Jenks died. He was a pioneer settler of this locality. He was never married. New Berlin Teachers Chosen, New Berlin. At a recent meeting of the school board the following teachers were employed for next year; Principal, Thomas E.

Gish to Study Music. Pittsfield. Mrs. G. Gish of Chambersburg, widow of the late Rev.

Gilbert A. Gish, of that place, has returned to her. former home at Cincinnati, O. She will enter a conservatory of music there. This is the last chapter In the tragedy in which Rev.
