SLOAN RITES SET FOR TOMORROW 'Long Career In Business and Politics Ends At the Age of Ninety Lonaconins, Sept. 3--Serv- ices for former State Senator James M. Sloan, who died yesterday after- noon, will be held at the home to- afternoon at 3:15 with 'burial In Allegany Cemetery, Frost- burg. The Rev.

He a member of the Lonacomng town council from 1900 to 1S02. As far as is known, Mr. Sloan was oldest Mason in Maryland. He was initiated into the order March .5. 1873, was raised December 3 of a year and was made a life mem- ber December 23, 1923.

He was a past master of George's Creek Val- ley Lodge No. 161, a member of Gar- Chapter of the Royal Arch and Thirty-third degree of the Scottish Rite. Native of Eckharl Born at Eckhart. August 3, 1851, Mr, Sloan was a son of the. late a R.

and Ann Muir Sloan, natives of Ayrshire, Scotland, who came to this country in the years 1837 and 1840, they being united in marriage at Mt. Savage, Md. He received his early education at the public schools," later taking a course at the Bryant Straiten Business College, Balti- more, in the winter of 1871. Start- ing iiis business career early in the field, he advanced stead- ily until he succeeded his brother, the late David Sloan, as president of the Lonaconing Savings Bank in 19Qo. He also served as president of the Bankers Association of Western a a for several years.

A member of the Episcopalian Church, Mr. Sloan was a boyhood friend of the late Rt. Rev. John Gardiner Murray, native of Lona- coning and bishop of Maryland and presiding bishop at the time of his death. Bishop Murray confirmed Mr.

3--William O. son of Mr.s. Elizabeth Sires, Spring street, has been awarded a thiee-year scholarship to Western Maryland College. The scholarship, the only one of its kind awarded iti Allegany county, provides room, "Aboard and tuition for the duration of the student's course at the col- lege. Young Sires, an honor gradu- ate of Bcall High School, 1940, was an honor student at the college last year.
