Connie Mack in Florida's September primary. Mack, of Cape Coral, is the lone Republican in the race for the Senate seat being vacated by three-term Democrat Lawton Chiles. Four Democrats also are seeking the post. Merkle, 44, could not be reached for comment at his home or Tampa office on Saturday and did not return telephone calls from the Associated Press. His secretary, Dot Bunger, said she knew nothing about any political plans her boss might have.

But she announced that Merkle, nicknamed "Mad Dog" while at Notre Dame for his aggressiveness on the gridiron, is planning a series of news conferences around Mack's well-organized campaign has tied up most Republican donors. Mack "has all the big name givers. It would be hard to get in this late," Ms. Austin said of the federal prosecutor. Mack's communications director, Mark Mills, said he couldn't believe that Merkle would run.

He also shrugged off the magazine's report that the White House is unlikely to endorse Mack over Merkle. Merkle was named U.S. Attorney for Florida's Middle District in 1982. Since then, he has obtained indictments against three sitting Florida representatives, two judges, three prosecutors and dozens of bankers, attorneys and postal workers. Florida on Monday.

Florida Republican leaders could not confirm Merkle's reported political debut, but expressed dismay at that prospect. "He got headlines out of the drug case and he thinks he's really riding high right now but that's not going to do it," said former state GOP Chairman Tommy Thomas of Panama City. "He's making a tragic mistake getting in there because Mack has the backing of the Republican party in this state." Florida's current GOP chair, Jeanne Austin, said candidates normally would check with the party before launching campaigns. But she said she has never met or spoken to Merkle, and she noted that section of the maga- zine's July 4 issue says MerKie Merkle will challenge fellow Republican Obituaries 1A Rohrer Studios Searching For America's Cutest Kids Teens Wednesday, June 29, 1988 Local Model Search Portrait Special!
