2BWednesday, September 20, 1995 Tallahassee Democrat NFL ROUNDUP BRIEFS FLORIDA STATE Ms labor the fruits .0 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS GREEN BAY, Wis. The Green Bay Packers offensive linemen found fruit in their lockers Monday, courtesy of halfback Edgar Bennett Bennett was reminded after the gesture that Dallas tailback Emmitt Smith once bought his linemen gold watches. "Yeah, but that was at the end of the season," Bennett said, smiling. "If I get 1,000 you never know." Offensive linemen in Green Bay have gotten used to their Timexes. The Packers' last rusher was Ter-dell Middleton in 1978.

With 204 yards on 63 carries, 53 in the past two games, Bennett's on pace to gain 1,088 yards. Bennett, a former Florida State standout, has four fewer carries than Smith and five more than Detroit's Barry Sanders. Heady company for Bennett, who didn't carry that many times until the eighth game last season, when he played fullback. Bennett's 23 rushes Sunday chewed up 87 yards and valuable time in Green Bay's 14-6 victory over the winless New York Giants. In a 27-24 victory at Chicago six days earlier, he got 96 yards on 30 carries the first time in 14 seasons a Green Bay running back got that many handoffs.

Cowboys ATLANTA Jerry Jones met Tuesday with the men who sued him for $300 million and came away feeling good. "I got a great hearing," the Cowboys owner said after the four-hour meeting with the other 29 owners in which he assured them he wasn't breaking league rules with his agreement with Nike and Pepsi, which the NFL called "ambush marketing deals" that violate the NFL's revenue-sharing policies. Jones' explanation did nothing to change commissioner Paul Tagliabue's mind about what he considers Jones challenge.to revenue sharing, the rock on which the league has been built. Jones seemed to have little support Robert Kraft of New England, who has his own side deal with Pepsi, was the closest to Jones in position and tried to work out a compromise before the lawsuit Kraft said he would try to set up marketing quotas that owners would have to meet. "He raises some legitimate points for the future," Kraft said of Jones.

"We have to think differently about certain things. I understand the issues he's raising." Jones, expected to soon announce another independent deal with American Express, said earlier he was not surprised by the NFL suit, which he called a "dumb" move by a league prone to litigation. Dolphins Coach Don Shula, bothered recently by a sore right knee, underwent arthroscopic surgery Tuesday to repair torn cartilage, the team said. The Dolphins had the day off following their 23-10 victory Monday night over Pittsburgh. Shula recuperated at home after surgery and was expected back at practice today.

Former Seminole Mobley arrested Former Florida State and Denver Broncos tight end Orson Mobley was in jail on $125,000 bond Tuesday in Jacksonville, charged with sexually assaulting two women. Mobley was arrested Monday after two women reported being sexually assaulted by the 6-foot-5, 260-pound ex-player about six hours apart in separate incidents, police Lt. Dan Principe said. Mobley denied the charges, saying he paid the women for sex, according to a police report. The first victim, a 26-year-old woman, said she was abducted at gunpoint about 12:18 a.m.

Monday and forced into a car, where she was beaten and raped." The victim said she jumped from the vehicle without, her shoes, pants or underwear when she spotted a police car, the report said. The second victim, whose age was not released, said she was offered a ride by the suspect about 6 a.m. He told her he needed to run some errands, but instead parked the car, punched her and sexually assaulted her, the police report said. She was then forced out of the vehicle, but got the tag number and reported it to police. Mobley, 32, lettered at Florida State in 1982 before tranferring to Salem College in West Virginia, where he played for Terry Bowden, son of FSU coach Bobby Bowden.

The Spurs were defeated in the Western Conference Finals 4-2 by the eventual champion Houston Rockets. Players will look to change union The vote by NBA players to preserve their union became official Tuesday when the dissident players declined to challenge the results of last week's election.

The dissenting faction, which included Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing, will work within the system to change their union. "The players who filed the petition carefully considered and concluded the best thing for the players was to concentrate their efforts on bringing players together and reforming the players' association," said Jeffrey Kessler, an attorney for the dissident players. "The players don't feel they can be effective if they're divided." After the decertification bid failed, player representatives voted 25-2 Sept 13 to approve a new collective bargaining agreement which was agreed to Aug. 8. The owners approved the six-year agreement 24-5 last Friday, and the league's 254-month lockout ended Monday.

Training camps will open as scheduled Oct 6 and the season will begin on time on Nov. 3. Miller becomes Turner Sports analyst Cheryl Miller joined Turner Sports as a reporter and studio analyst for TNT and TBS on Tuesday, four days after resigning as women's basketball coach at Southern California The Hall of Fame player served as a color commentator with ABC and ESPN before returning to USC in 1993. She led the Trojans to a 44-14 record, a Pacific-10 title in 1994 and two NCAA Tournament berths. "This was a very hard and emotional decision for me," Miller said Friday.

"I've had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity presented to me, one that was very difficult to pass up. Coaching at USC was a great experience and 111 always have ties to the university."
