IE '3 llw- By PETER ABRAHAM Boston Globe FORT MYERS, Fla The player the Red Sox received as compensation from the Cubs for the hiring of former general manager Theo Epstein, righthanded reliever Chris Carpenter, is having elbow surgery on Thursday.

"Headed into surgery tomorrow with Dr Andrews to remove a bone spur in my elbow" Carpenter tweeted on Wednesday. "Stayin' positive and prepared to work harder than ever to come back as soon as I can this season." Carpenter, 26, has appeared in just two major league spring training games and was not a candidate for the Opening Day roster. Red Sox GM Ben Cherington confirmed that Carpenter is having surgery, but would not comment on whether the injury predated the Feb. 21 trade with the Cubs or when Carpenter might return. In October, Epstein quit the Red Sox with a year remaining on his contract, and the Sox were guaranteed "significant compensation" from the Cubs.

Epstein was allowed to join the Cubs as their president of baseball operations before the compensation was negotiated. Four months later, the Cubs sent Carpenter and a player to be named later to the Red Sox for a player to be named later. That deal was announced as satisfying the compensation. Cook Sizzles Righthander Aaron Cook has a May 1 opt-out in his contract, and judging by the reaction of scouts watching him in his five-inning outing on Wednesday against Tampa Bay's Double A hitters, Cook will have no trouble finding a job if the Red Sox don't have a spot for him. Cook touched 86 miles per hour on the radar gun, SCOTT STRAZZANTE I TRIBUNE NEWSPAPERS RED SOX RELEIVER Chris Carpenter will need to have elbow surgery to remove a bone spur.

Bailey Ready Andrew Bailey said he's ready to start the season. In a Triple A game on Wednesday, he pitched an inning, went back to the dugout, and then threw part of a second inning. He will pitch a few more innings before Opening Day. "It's been a quick spring training," Bailey said. 'You don't want to start things the way I did with a lat injury coming to a new team, but I feel fine and I've had enough work.

I'm ready to go." Select Group Curt Schilling, who was a part of two World Series championship teams in Boston, heads the 2012 class of inductees for the Red Sox Hall of Fame. Also to be enshrined at ceremonies at Fenway Park on Aug. 3 will be former players Marty Barrett, Ellis Burks, Joe Dobson, and Dutch Leonard, as well as John I. Taylor, who owned the team from 1904-11, and former groundskeeper Joe Mooney. Clay Buchholz was tagged for two homers and four earned runs in the Triple A game.

He went six innings, throwing 89 pitches. Buchholz will pitch the third game of the season-opening series against the Tigers. "I started out feeling great in the first inning and then I had a couple of long innings," Buchholz said. "I'm out there trying to work on things, but overall I was happy with it." Vicente Padilla threw three innings as he began his new bullpen role, and afterward was asked if he'd prefer to start with another team. "The Red Sox have given me the opportunity and I want to pitch here," he said.

Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched well over nearly two innings in an intrasquad game. He was throwing 92 mph. Rich Hill had a little command issue, but also threw hard in an inning of relief. TORU HANAIREUTERS PHOTO The Mariners' Ichiro Suzuki, left, is chased by A's shortstop Cliff Pennington after one of his four hits Wednesday. MARINERS 3, A'S 1: Dustin Ackley snapped a tie with an RBI single in the 11th inning and Japan's Ichiro Suzuki thrilled the home fans by going 4-for-5 and driving in a run as the Mariners won the season opener in Tokyo.

Mariners RHP Felix Hernandez yielded one run on five hits and struck out six in eight solid innings. Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes went l-for-3 in his major-league debut for the A's. DODGERS: OF Matt Kemp was excited by the news that an investment group headed by Lakers legend Magic Johnson had agreed to buy the team for $2.15 billion. "It'stight, man, for Magic to be one of our owners," Kemp said. "He knows what the Dodgers mean to LA.

Magic is very important to and the fans love him. Good day for the Dodgers." NATIONALS: Because closer Drew Storen will not be ready to pitch on opening day because of a sore elbow, he will begin the season on the 15-day disabled list Brad Lidgeand Henry Rodriguez are expected to get the save chances while Storen is out BREWERS: RHP Yovani Gallardo earned the opening-day start vs. the Cardinals, his third straight for RHPZack Greinke allowed just one run over seven innings and has an 0.93 ERA this spring. ASTROS: LHP Wandy Rodriguez earned the opening-day start and will go April 6 against the Rockies. EXTRA INNINGS: Reds reliever Nick Masset will start the season on the disabled list with shoulder The Twins released RHP Joel Zumaya, who needs Tommy John surgery after hurting his elbow early in the spring.

Braves IB Freddie Freeman hit his fifth homer in three games and his sixth of the spring. which normally wouldn impress anyone. But his ability to get hitters out is undeniable. Cook threw 68 pitches and got 11 ground outs. He's been a bit behind the rest of the staff because the team didn't want to tax his pitching shoulder, which he's had problems with in the past He also had a sore groin for a while.

He retired the first three hitters of Wednesday's game on eight pitches. He Cook was so efficient, the coaches had him pitch to six batters in the first inning. He needed only 13 pitches to do that. Cook said he hasn't heard much about his role with the team, or if he'll even make the team. There's a possibility he will go to Pawtucket since he's working under a minor league contract, but the team won't have much time to make a decision unless he decides to extend the May 1 deadline.

Cook said he's benefited from working here with Bob McClure, his former pitching coach with the Rockies. METS YANKEES Young's Shoulder In Better Shape Clock Is Ticking For Girardi PINEDA HUGHES will all work out, but I can't do anything unless it's healthy. It's been a great rehab process thus far. It's been smooth and steady. I hope it will continue that way, but it's time to be in an environment where I can be doing baseball activity and really sort of start spring training." Young said he texted with Santana throughout the process.

But also stressed that each rehab is different with capsule tears, even if the surgery itself sounds similar. In both of their cases, the shoulder was cut open it was not arthroscopic and that can add to the recovery time. Still, Young is a little more than 10 months removed from surgery, and for Santana, it's been 18 months since he's pitched a regular-season game. In Chien-Ming Wang's case, his return was the two-year anniversary of the operation. Despite the uncertain projections, Terry Collins already is thinking of Young as a potential sixth starter later in the year, suggesting his others such as Santana and Dillon Gee could use the additional rest by then.

"We don't know yet," Collins said. "If he comes back in the shape he was last year, and the form we saw last year, he's a very good major league pitcher. We don't know what's going to happen this summer. Is Johan going to need extra days? Some guys could use an extra day now and then." By DAVID LENNON Newsday PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla -The Chris Young Experiment, Part II, got under way Wednesday at the Mets' spring training complex.

Where it leads this time is anyone's guess, but Young is probably in better shape post-surgery than he was a year ago. That's right. The doctor told Young that his shoulder had been damaged long before he finally broke down and needed the May 16 operation to repair the torn anterior capsule in his pitching shoulder. He lasted only four starts pretty good ones, too and cost the Mets' $L1 million. "Initially, when the injury happened, I had been pitching with it for maybe a year and a half," Young said Wednesday.

"It had scarred over they thought it had healed. It felt like the rug had been ripped out underneath my feet It was just a shock to me to start back at square one." Young underwent the same surgery as Johan San-tana, who has not pitched in the majors since 2010, but seems to have made more rapid progress. He already had thrown off a mound nine times, and expects to face hitters soon. As for a potential return date, that is too murky to estimate at this point. "I'm focused on the rehab that's it," Young said.

"If my shoulder's healthy, it NY. Manager To Name Starting Rotation Soon By ERIK BOLAND Newsday KISSIMMEE, Fla Decision day is on the horizon and Joe Girardi knows this: "Somebody's going to be disappointed," he said Wednesday. With the season opener a week from Friday, the calendar necessitates that the Yankees' manager, in consultation with his staff and general manager Brian Cashman, announce his five-man rotation. "We might do it on the way over to Miami and let the guys know," Girardi said, giving for the first time his intended timetable for an announcement, but also noting later "you can change your mind" at any point after the season starts. The Yankees, after playing the Astros in Kissimmee on Saturday, head to Miami for a two-game series in the Marlins' new ballpark Sunday and Monday.

Girardi said Hiroki Kuroda, who allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings against the Braves on Wednesday, which lowered his spring ERA to 2.91 from 3.07, would start the season's second game. That lines up the 37-year-old to start the home opener against the Angels on April 13. From there the choice is among Ivan Nova, Freddy Garcia, Michael Pineda and Phil Hughes. Hughes was the most consistent of the quartet this spring and almost assured of a spot. Nova was 16-4 with a 3.70 ERA last season but hasn't had a great spring, entering his start against minor leaguers Wednesday 1-2 with a 6.86 ERA.

"I think the biggest thing I haven't seen from him is the consistency in the location of his fastball," Girardi said of Nova "But I think it's gotten better as spring training's gone on." GARCIA vs. what a veteran like Garcia has already declared himself to be. "When you look at a guy who doesn't have a lot of time you're trying to consider the upside of what you could possibly get," Girardi said. "I think you have a pretty good understanding of what Freddy's going to give you." The bullpen is a probability for the odd man out in the competition, though for players like Pineda and Nova who have options, a ticket to the minors can't be ruled out "The biggest thing is us trying to pick those five starters and that they're the right guys," Girardi said. "Somebody's going to be disappointed.

That's the worst part of this, that someone's going to be disappointed, and they have to get over their disappointment and help this team however we ask them to help us." NOVA Girardi said Pineda, despite the 6-7 right-hander's velocity being a constant topic, has impressed him by continuing to get outs. "I've been really impressed how much his changeup improved in the six weeks we've been here," Girardi said. "And he has the ability to pitch." Girardi said he believes Pineda's velocity will again reach the consistent 95 -97 mph it was the fir st half of last year, though he added, "the bottom line is outs." Girardi knows exactly what he has in Garcia, who went 12-8 with a 3.62 ERA last season and, though rarely a good spring performer in his career, is 1-1 with a2.92 ERA entering his start against minor leaguers tomorrow. Girardi said among the considerations is projecting what a young pitcher like Nova and Pineda will be "If my shoulder's healthy it will all work out, but I can't do anything unless it's healthy It's been a great rehab process thus far." Pitcher Chris Young.
