Howard Community Hospital Simmons, Stuart and Melinda Bush Continued from Page 1 Bush said last week he did not fear Noriega might disclose any CIA information that could embarrass him or the government. "I think that's history, and I think the main thing is that he should be tried and brought to justice. And we are pursuing that course with no fear of that," the president said. Prosecutors anticipate that Noriega will claim that his alleged drug activities were sanctioned by the U.S.

government because he was a CIA informant. But the government is expected to argue that having been an informant does not make Noriega immune from prosecution. Bush and his aides insist Noriega will get a fair trial. In fact, one of the conditions under which Noriega agreed to surrender, White House officials said, was a fair trial that would not lead to the death penalty, which is allowed for some drug kingpins. Noriega's surrender came at the end of a day when Bush kept a low profile, making few public appearances as rumors of a possible surrender flew and tension mounted around the White House.

It wasn't until he returned from playing racquetball at 6:30 p.m. EST that Bush learned his nemesis had agreed to leave the Vatican's Panama City embassy and surrender, said. Word came from Defense Secretary Dick Cheney at about 9 p.m. that Noriega was in U.S. military custody.

Bush drafted a statement and rushed to the briefing room to deliver the news less than an hour later. It was a moment he has long wanted to savor. (Smith), Russiaville, a girl, Alexandra Kylee, 8 pounds, ounces, at 10:01 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 1989.

GM Continued from Page 1 may make it possible for the Impact to double its battery life to 40,000 miles, which would make operating costs nearly equal to those of gas-powered cars. The 120-mile range is not expected to be improved much, officials said. "You've got to keep in mind that this is not a car for driving to New York," he said. "But as a second car, running around L.A., I think it's great." Smith said GM might need to produce as many as 100,000 of the vehicles a year for them to compete with can powered by internal-combustion engines. Each of the Big Three automakers has aggressive programs to research cars powered By fuels other than gasoline, but Smith said the Impact was far more advanced than any other electric car.

Kokomo Continued from Page 1 call from a captain in Chris's unit. "When the captain called us that frightened us all over again," Thompson said. "But he said Chris was doing fine and all the shrapnel was out." Saturday night Chris called his parents from Panama. "The conversation was very limited," Carolyn Thompson explained. "He said he felt great, he couldn't run very well and everything was fine.

I thank God he is all right." Although the Thompsons were elated to learn that their son was fine, they were incredibly pleased to about the impending return of Chris and many of the other soldiers in Panama. "This weekend some of the soldiers will be coming back to Fort Bragg," Carolyn said. "There is supposed to be a big parade for them, and they (soldiers) are going to parachute in. Chris won be able to because of his leg. He is supposed to call us the second he gels in.

Hopefully, he will be able to come home to Kokomo for a long weekend. I wish they were au coming home."
