It certainly didn't do much to inspire them. Nick Johnson drove in four runs and the Florida Marlins beat the listless Mets 13-4 to gain ground on the NL East-leading Phillies.

Hanley Ramirez and Cody Ross each had three hits and two RBIs for the Marlins, who completed their first sweep of the Mets since taking four straight Aug. 30-Sept. 2, 2004, in New York. Dan Uggla hit his 27th homer in the third inning. Florida has enjoyed its September trips to New York the last couple of years.

Spoilers in 2007 and '08, the Marlins twice dashed the Mets' playoff hopes on the last day with victories. This year they came to Citi Field with postseason aspirations of their own. The Marlins wrapped up a 5-1 trip and moved within five games of Philadelphia, which lost 8-7 at Washington. They also remained 5K back of the wild card-leading Rockies with 22 games remaining, including six against the Phillies. Johnson had two-run singles in the seventh and eighth as the Marlins missed their season high for runs by one and amassed 16 hits.

Mets players and manager Bobby Valentine were out there helping to load the trucks. When play resumed Sept.

17, the Mets won eight of nine to get back in the playoff chase, but they leveled off and missed out. Dom JSmore BOSTON Red Sox officials will meet today to decide the next course of action for Daisuke Matsuzaka, but given his performance Wednesday in a minor league rehab start, his first major league start since June may come sooner rather than later. In a playoff game for Class A Salem, Matsuzaka threw 89 pitches over 6 innings, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out seven. The Associated Press BOBBY PARNELL goes five innings and gives up five earned runs, including Dan Uggla's homer. The Mets (62-78) fell 16 games under .500 for the first time since finishing 71-91 in 2004.

Bobby Parnell walked consecutive batters with the bases loaded after an error by shortstop Anderson Hernandez and Angel Pagan forgot how many outs there were while running the bases. Luis Castillo had another adventure at second base and New York pitchers didn't have a 1-2-3 inning until the ninth. Red Sox originally intended to have Matsuzaka make a major league start Wednesday but decided he would need another rehab outing. It may have been his final minor league start. "I think he threw the ball very well," said Salem manager Chad Epperson.

"Just like we drew it up as an organization. We were very pleased with how he responded." Matsuzaka Rays at Red Sox: 7 p.m., NESN Steakhouse. "It's a heck of a lot better meal than these guys are used to," Epperson said. "What a true professional, the way this guy acted with the players. I hope these young men paid attention to how he went about his business.

Relief For Wakefield Wakefield, as scheduled, was given a cortisone shot for the nerve injury in his lower back Thursday It was the third shot Wakefield has received this year. The Sox remain unsure whether he will pitch again this season Josh Beckett used his off day to promote a good cause, hosting the third Beckett Bowl at Lucky Strike Lanes in support of the Josh Beckett Foundation The Sox open a three-game series tonight against the Tampa Bay Rays, who have lost eight in a row. Lowell leads its series 1-0 and Salem is 2-0, winning 6-4 Thursday When their affiliates make the postseason, it grants the Red Sox more of a chance to evaluate prospects. "Absolutely," Epperson said.

"Our parent ball club is expected to win every night. This is part of their development, too, to see how they respond for these situations." AMERICAN LEAGUE YANKEES: Derek Jeter tied Lou Gehrig for the team record Wednesday night, getting three hits against the Rays for a career total of 2,721. It was a mark the Hall of Famer held by himself for more than seven decades. BLUE JAYS: Roy Halladay will get an extra day of rest before his next start, Tuesday in New York. LHP David Purcey will make his first start since April on Monday.

ROYALS: Gil Meche is probably done for the year with a shoulder problem, and fellow right-hander Brian Bannister is flying to New York for a second opinion on his shoulder. Meche is 6-10 with a 5.09 ERA and Bannister is 7-12, 4.73. ANGELS: Torii Hunter is the winner of the Branch Rickey Award in recognition of his work with kids in the community. Hunter's community works include the "Torii Hunter Project Education Initiative," which provides college scholarships to students in California, Arkansas, Nevada and Minnesota. RAYS: Carlos Pena had season-ending surgery to repair two broken fingers on his left hand.

The Rays expect a full recovery in eight to 10 weeks. NATIONAL LEAGUE ROCKIES: Jose Contreras strained his right quadriceps while trying to beat out a grounder in the third against the Reds on Thursday and was taken out of the game. Ubaldo Jimenez was scheduled to throw a bullpen session to test a hamstring he tweaked running the bases in his last start. He's scheduled to pitch again Saturday in San Diego. Troy Tulowitzki was out of the lineup for a third straight game with a stiff back.

Thursday's win completed a season sweep (7-0) of the Reds for the first time in team history. NATIONALS: Left-hander Jesse English was claimed off waivers from the Giants and added to the 40-man roster. The 24-year-old English went 7-7 with a 4.20 ERA in 26 games, including 19 starts, for Double-A Connecticut. METS: A streaker who disrupted a game by jumping onto Citi Field naked except for a stuffed monkey tied around his waist has been banned from the ballpark for a year. Craig Coakley of Queens pleaded guilty Thursday to interfering with a sporting event.

He must pay a $1,000 fine and $2,000 in civil penalties. The 38-year-old plumber told police after streaking on May 12 that it was a bet. His boss told him he'd pay a week's salary if he did it. AMERICAN LEAGUE Blue Jays 3, Twins 2: Jose Bau-tista hit a solo homer and Brett Cecil won his final start of the season. Minnesota's Joe Mauer went 0-for-4, dropping his major league-leading average to .363.

Royals 7, Tigers 4: Alex Gordon and Alberto Callaspo homered, leading the last-place Royals to a three-game sweep over the first-place Tigers. Mariners at Angels: John Lackey went nine innings in his last start, only to get a no-decision against the Royals in a game the Angels won in 11. NATIONAL LEAGUE Rockies 5, Reds 1: Garrett Atkins hit a two-run homer and Jason Giambi had a two-run double in a five-run third inning in the seventh straight win for the Rockies, who ended a 9-1 homestand. Nationals 8, Phillies 7: Ian Desmond hit his first home run, Adam Dunn hit his 36th and the Nationals held off a five-run ninth-inning Phillies rally. Marlins 13, Mets 4: Nick Johnson drove in four runs and Hanley Ramirez and Cody Ross each drove in a pair.

Dan Uggla hit his 27th home run. Braves 9, Astros 7: Nate McLouth hit a leadoff home run, igniting a three-run first. The Braves added three in the second and held on. Epperson had never watched Matsuzaka pitch, so he could not offer a fair comparison to Matsuzaka at full strength. But he came away with the impression that his start was "very promising" for him to return soon to Boston.

Matsuzaka had struggled in higher minor league levels, but he was sharp Wednesday He threw his fastballs at 91 and 92 mph consistently and topped out at 93, Epperson said. He overwhelmed batters with a two-seam fastball. Matsuzaka threw all his pitches, and Epperson often wondered what pitch he had just thrown. "They all moved," Epperson said. "His stuff was crisp.

He had a good feel for his fastball and his cutter." If he remains on his five-day schedule, Matsuzaka's next start would come Monday, an off day If the Red Sox feel comfortable with Matsuzaka's health, he could pitch Tuesday against the Angels. For now, Paul Byrd is that day's probable starter. The Red Sox will not be pressed to insert Matsuzaka into the rotation. Because of the off day, they can continue to use a four-man rotation until Sept. 19.

Matsuzaka departed Winston-Salem, N.C.
