Georgia's 42 first-half points were a Bulldog record, topping the 35 they scored in a 56-6 victory over VMI in 1967.

The 62-point total also was the most scored under Dooley and the highest since a 76-0 victory over The Citadel in 1958. Dukes, who took over the starting job last week when Todd Williams injured his shoulder, scored on a 2-yard run and threw touchdown passes of 21 and 49 yards to Herman Archie and Stanley Blal-ock during the three-minute blitz late in the second period. Vanderbilt Coach George Maclntyre saw his dream of an upset turn into a nightmare Saturday as the 14th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs routed the Commodores 62-35 in a Southeastern Conference football contest. "I didn't dream that Georgia could score that many points or we Could play as badly on defense," Maclntyre said after the Bulldogs racked up 562 yards on offense, including 373 on the ground.

The game was probably the last for the foreseeable future between the two schools. The series is apparently dead because of disagreements over scheduling. "We're not out of the woods yet," Carmody added. "We're just out of the quicksand standing on the bank where we at least have a chance to run.

We're happy with the win but not happy to be 2-5." Ole Miss coach Billy Brewer said his team was "mentally tired." "Southern Mississippi played real well, but this is the first time this year that I didn't feel like we played four quarters of football," Brewer said. "We're not the type of team we're just not good enough to miss the kinds of opportunities we did and still win." Trailing 10-3 at intermission, Southern scored on its first two possessions of the third quarter, with its only touchdown coming after Tim Smith picked off a pass. Smith intercepted a Kent Austin pass at the Southern 36 and returned it 31 yards. It was a happy homecoming for Bill Arn-sparger.

LSU's first-year head coach, who hails from nearby Paris, saw his lOth-ranked LSU Tigers win a battle of turnovers and penalties and defeat the previously unbeaten Nor 16 Wildcats 36-10 Saturday. Dalton Hilliard rushed for 164 yards and a record-tying four touchdowns for the Tigers. "I'm happy for my mother and my cousin," Arnsparger said. "They have to live here. I am also happy for the fans who made the trip up here.

They had confidence in us." But Arnsparger was happiest of all for his players, who overcame six turnovers and 107 yards in penalties. Hilliard scored three times in a 2:09 span of the third period to turn a 9-3 squeaker into a 29-3 laugher. The Tigers, 5-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in Southeastern Conference play, built their halftime lead as Juan Betanzos kicked field goals of 43, 20 and 38 yards to set an LSU career record of 36. The field goals, plus a defense that held Kentucky's 15th-ranked offense to 75 yards in the first half, enabled the Tigers to withstand three lost fumbles and two interceptions in the first two periods. But Kentucky, which got a 33-yard field goal from Joe Worley that tied the score 3-3 early in the second quarter, coughed the ball up four times itself in the first half and five more in the final two periods to set up Hilliard's last three touchdowns.

The Wildcats also were penalized 13 times for 77 yards, one of which cost them a touchdown. had as many turnovers as I've ever seen us have," Coach Jerry Claiborne said after the setback ended Kentucky's best start in 34 years and left the Wildcats with a 5-1 record, 1-1 in the SEC. "We just self-destructed. How many turnovers did we have? I lost count. Nine? You just can't do that against a team like LSU.

I thought LSU was a fine football team and some of those turnovers were good plays by them." 'Arnsparger agreed. thought our defense was real good all day," he said. "We had a good pass rush and effective defense against the run. The five-year Auburn senior, getting a rare chance to start, completed his first 10 passes and directed an offense that turned back Georgia Tech 48-34 in college football Saturday.

Mann, whose only other experience this season was two series in Auburn's opening loss to Miami, got the call against Tech and directed an almost flawless offense as Auburn jumped to a decisive first-half lead. "I told Mike it looked like he had been playing all year long," said Coach Pat Dye. "The work he has done all year has paid off and I've had confidence in him all the way. I'm convinced we should have been playing him more." Mann played most of the way for an offense that rang up 581 yards. Auburn scored on its first two possessions, the first time Tech had given up first-quarter points this season.

"I've never seen anything like that and I don't have the slightest idea what happened," Tech Coach Bill Curry said of Auburn's first half. "It's the darndest thing I ever saw in my life." Thirteenth-ranked Auburn scored on seven of its first eight possessions and drove to the 1 on the other in raising its record to 5-2. Tech now is 3-2-1, The Tigers exploded for 41 points in the first half, with Mann passing for 42 yards for one touchdown and Jeff Burger passing 18 yards for another. Tommie Agee, Tim Jessie and Collis Campbell ran for touchdowns ad Robert McGinty kicked two field goals before intermission. Mann, starting for injured Pat Washington, connected with Freddie Weygand on a 56-yard scoring pass in the final quarter and ended the day with 11 of 17 completions for 271 yards.

Quarterback John Dewberry rallied Tech to 34 second-half points, throwing touchdown tosses of 33 yards to Gary Lee and 45 yards to Gary Wilkins, and running it in from the 9 himself. Robert Lavette and malcolm King got the other touchdowns on short runs. Lavette, with 60 yards, became Tech's all-time leading rusher, -passing Eddie Lee Ivery, who gained 3,517 from 1975-78. Lavette, a senior, now has 3,529 yards. So completely did Auburn dominate that the Tigers did not have to punt until less than three minutes remained in the third period.

Meanwhile, Auburn held Tech to only 15 yards in the first half. The Yellow Jackets managed their initial first down in the second period on a 10-yard run by Dewberry, but on the next play Tom Powell knocked the ball loose from Lavette and Gerald Williams recovered at the Tech 36. The second-quarter scoring burst "had a lot to do with the outcome of the game," Dooley said. "That plus the touchdown drive on the opening kickoff in the third quarter put us in control. The intrastate series may be dead, but not the University of Southern Mississippi football team. Southern, a 10-point underdog, used a scrambling 7-yard touchdown run by Robert Ducksworth in the third quarter to hold on for a 13-10 victory oyer archrival Ole Miss. "We didn't make the big mistakes fumbles and interceptions this week that we've been making in recent games," said Southern Mississippi coach Jim Carmpdy.
