THE HARTFORD COURANT: Sunday, April 22, 1990 E5 Congenital ailment throws scare into Britsox relief pitcher Eastern League By VIV BERNSTEIN Courant Staff Writer -Paul Kuzniar still wants a career Ht baseball. He still wants to pitch for the Boston Red Sox some day. 3ut it's not life and death to him. Kuzniar, 24, a reliever with the Double-A New Britain Red Sox, Ke and death flashed before his eyes April 15. Although he didn't play the Britsox were rained out for sojne reason Kuzniar's heart started palpitating.

"I was scared, I really was," said Kuzniar, who was born with an irregular heartbeat. "I'm not going to say I thought I was going to die, but you know what I mean? WCNX 1150-AM of Middletown, which has broadcast Britsox games the past five seasons, has discontinued coverage. The station lacked sponsor support for the 60 broadcasts or so they planned. No road games will be broadcast. Some home games can be heard on WFCS 98-FM, the Central Connecticut State University student station.

The Britsox played only eight of 10 games in the season-opening home-stand, with two rainouts. They will make up a game against Albany-Colonie with a doubleheader when the Yankees visit June 1. 17 runs in their past seven games. They are 5-2 in that span. The only shocker for Stange was the Opening Day rout of first-round draft pick Kevin Morton of Norwalk, who gave up seven runs in 2 innings April 10.

"The biggest surprise was Morton getting rapped around in his first start," Stange said. "It was nice to see him come back and pitch a nice game." In his second start Monday, Morton pitched eight innings in a 6-0 victory over Harrisburg. Negotiations between Britsox owner Joe Buzas and the city on a new lease for Beehive Field will just hope it doesn't mess up my concentration on the mound." Kuzniar said he will spend four days at a New Haven hospital during the June All-Star break to have further tests. Red Sox roving pitching instructor Lee Stange was in New Britain for several days last week. He liked what he saw.

"This is probably the best group overall we've had in Double-A that I can remember," he said. "We thought we'd have a good pitching staff. So far, they've proved us right." The Britsox, 6-4 after losing 4-2 at Harrisburg Saturday, have given up begin after May 28, when Buzas returns from the West Coast. The lease, which was signed eight years ago with a three-year option picked up in 1987, expires Dec. 31.

Buzas is looking for several concessions from the city. He wants a higher screen behind home plate so foul balls won't reach the concession stand area. He also wants 200 to 300 more box seats installed behind home plate. "I'm sure it's going to be quick," Buzas said of the negotiations. "I don't have time to discuss it all summer." Buzas said he has six offers to buy the club.

"I look at things a lot different now as far as my personal life, and baseball. Life's too short to be worrying about all those little things I used to worry about." Kuzniar has seen several doctors and is on medication. He said the problem appears under control. He has been approved to resume pitching, coach Rich Gale said, but Kuzniar hasn't pitched since April 12. He's eager, but a bit anxious, too.

"When I go out and I pitch and I run now," he said, "every time I do something, I'm thinking about it. I 'OUR PRICING We'll meet competition's current advertised price on identical items. Third baseman Jeff Bagwell's throwing error in the bottom of the third inning allowed the Harrisburg Senators to score two runs and defeat the New Britain Red Sox 4-2 before 1,739 Saturday at Riverside Stadium.

The Britsox (6-4) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Mike Kelly scored from third on Juan Paris' sacrifice fly to center and Bob Zupcic scored on an error by shortstop Carlos Garcia on a grounder by Dave Milstein. The Britsox left runners in scoring position in six innings. Harrisburg cut the lead in the bottom of the third inning, when Scott Barczi scored from third on a Julio Perez ground single to left field. Perez advanced to third on Ed Yaco-pino's bloop single to center.

With runners on the corners, Moises Alou hit a grounder to Bagwell, who charged the ball, scooped it up and threw it over the head of the first baseman. The hit the stands and rolled along the wall into right field. Alou was given a hit and an RBI as Perez scored, while Bagwell was charged with an error, allowing Ya-copino to score from first. Harrisburg picked up another run in the seventh. With runners on first and second, New Britain rotated its infield for a bunt.

After two foul balls, Barczi squared but punched the ball into short left field to score Garcia. Britsox have a real aggressive defense on bunts," Barczi said. I. saw a lot of movement so I tried to hit. I would up slug bunting.

I wanted tb hit it in the ground, but hitting it where I did was good." -David Owen pitched eight innings for the Britsox, giving up eight hits, one walk and striking out one. 'Three! Harrisburg pitchers com- bined on a 10-hitter. Starter Randy Tomlin went five innings and was relieved by Jim Czajkowski, who went the next three and pitched to the first batter in the ninth. Steve Adams finished. Tomlin did not retire the side in order in any of his innings, but the 1 'Britsox were unable to do any more damage.

nil The teams wind up the series today at 2:05 p.m Harrisburg then to the road to meet Williams-port. New Britain travels to Hagers-town for a series. The Britsox will see pitcher Ben McDonald for two innings Tuesday. The Baltimore Orioles assigned him to Double-A for two weeks of rehabilitation of a shoulder injury. He strained his lateral oblique muscle in his first spring training start.

McDonald was 1-0 in six games for the Orioles last season. LET SEARS PROFESSIONALS INSTALL THEM! 433 43221 SteadyRider Gas Struts INSTALLED can' 2 flf 89tun ntra Alignment recom Utility 160 cold-cranking Motorcratt 60 Up to 540 cca. Up to 92 min. reserve cap. 77 DIEHARD iiii Up to 650 cca.
