PAGE EIGHT MONITOR-INDEX AND DEMOCRAT, MOBERLY, MO. SATURDAY EVENING, JULY 22, 1933 AL JOLSON FLOORS WALTER W1NCHELL Columnist Knocked Down Twice by Singer Before Crowd of 4,000 ATT THE MOBERLY THEATRES ROW OVER SCENARIO PROMPTS ATTACK HOLLYWOOD, July 22 Winchell, gossip columnist from New York, took it on the button from Al Jolson last night. Among the tilings the columnist never until now (he said so!) is the way the actor can punch ambiiilextrously, althougn Winchell insists that when Jolson mauled him tit the Hollywood Legion Stadium, boxing show he was helped by another guy. four thousand persons saw the brawl and versions were ex- tan ttoday, biit the tact remains that Jolson hit Winchell because he' didn't like him, oecause he resented things Wincheli haxi put in a movie scenario reflecting disparagingly---Jolson said--on Ruby Keeler. And he resented that De- cause Ruby Keeler is Mrs.

Al Jolson. How It Happened Here's the story The actor and his actress wite were among the customers of the boxing show when Winchell came in, heading for his ringside seat right near the Jolsons. Miss Keeler, shy, dark-eyed and appealing, suddenly Winchell and began to cry. Jolson looked around and spotted the columnist. With one movement he got up and swung on Winchell's chin.

Winchell sat down without further ado, but he didn take the count. He was game but his judgment was bad. As he came up he met Jolsons other and down Winchell went a second time. The spectators, by now standing on their seats to see a fight not carded on the evening's entertainment, lost count of the knockdowns at this point. Jolson said afterward he had floored the selt- announced Broadway tattler several times.

Disagree On the Score "He hit me in the back, of the neck," related Winchell ater. "And there were two of them--two guys hit me." Impromptu referees disagreed. Sports writers and others, including Detective Lieutenant "Lefty" James of the Los Angeles police department, put it in the recora that Jolson stood squarely before his man and swung from the heels fairly, squarely and very, very fast. Anyway, to get back to Miss Keeler, Winchell had just finished a scenario for a leading Hollywood film factory purporting--so it was said--to depict the lives or persons very much like Mr. and Mrs.

Al Jolson. Winchell said the scenario is "about a gangster and a chorus girl, but it's not about Jolson and bis wife." Miss Keeler, averred Jolson, was treated very badly, being identified in the script with gangsters, bootleggers and the like. Miss Keeler, he said further, cried for days after learning the nature ot the projected story, and when he saw Winchell he saw red at tne same time. Winchell Enjoys Show "I just up and popped him," said Jolson. "I hit Wmcnell several times, and I know I knockeu him down at least twice.

1 didn't hit him very hard, either." But Winchell sat through the boxing show with apparent enjoyment. From the adventuresome gambling of the small-town midway it goes to the business-like hijacking of the Great White Way. It takes a small-time confidence man and dumps him into the midst of the big time racketeering in the metropolis. Jimmy is out to do a little high- class hijacking against a girl he meets at a carnival.

He pretends to protect her interests at first but he delays too long and suddenly discovers that he has fallen in love with her. It takes a lot of warfare on the part of the big city gangsters to convince htm of it. The climax comes when he and the aforementioned gangsters tangle horns. Guess who wins!
