And it probably would try him if it could get its hands en him. To recapitulate: Ford originally fooled around with ballet, a courageous enterprise i didn't quite come off. This was too bad because It has scared away from ballet, except in small doses, ever since. Ford's second venture in TV was Ford Theater, which has done come of the finest dramatic yet seen on TV. It will be back.

And now Ford is laying a lot el coin on the line for the Jack Haley show (N.B.C.-TV 9 p. Thursday). Rating-wise, I suppose this is a wise move since variety shows all seem to achieve a quick popularity. In long run, my bet is that the multiplication of variety shows on television will bring them all crashing down on their sponsors' heads. It takes longer to build the ratings of the dramatic shows, but my theory is they'll outlast the comedians in the stretch.

You can get very nice odds on that proposition in case you're Interested. MR. HALET'S a very engaging person as well as a very epl comedian. Mr. Haley is so nice a person that you find yourself rooting for him, which cannot be of every comedian.

When things don't go well, you star! defending him, pointing out thai he was awfully good last week. Still, I'm known far and wide as a -man who never blinks at facts. And I'm not going to start fact-blinking at my age. The fact that I can't blink at in this case is that Mr. Haley is not one of those comedians who rise above his material.

If the material is good, he's good. If it isn't, he isn't. So much for that fact. The best sketches'on the Haley show are the oldest ones. They have been tested and perfected in scores of revues and burlesque houses.

The newest sketches haven't the polish or the finality and seem somehow incomplete. However, even the milder efforts are graced by very expert comics. Mr. Haley produces week after week top flight guests which have included Fields, Mary McCarthy, Ella Logan and Jules Munshin. Along with being a comedian of parts, Miss Logan, a fetching bit of Scottish heather, may be the most highly charged singer of them all.

And that's saying a great deal for this era of high- voltage female canaries. I though' she was to tear her hair out by the roots singing the tearful story of A Cottage For Sale I'd advise her to leave that song out of her repertoire. She'll die of heartbreak right in the middle of it some day. ALONG WITH the veterans Mr. Haley has initiated a policy of Introducing unknown comedians each week.

Virtually all of them give what are now known as impressions. In my youth they were called Imitations. They haven't changed a bit, either. In fact, they're still instating the same people Jimmy Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, Katherine Hepburn, Clark Gable anc Jimmy Stewart.

I'm getting awfully tired of imitation Edwarc G. Robinsons. I never met a man who couldn't imitate Edward Robinson reasonably well. It's a very small accomplishment.
