She says she wrote the letter on Aug.

29, 1991, eight weeks before Johnson tested positive for the HIV virus and two weeks before he married his longtime sweetheart, Cookie. The woman has filed a $2 million lawsuit against the former Los Angeles Lakers player. Johnson has admitted having sex with the woman once in June 1990, but he denied he ever got the letter. The Newsweek story was written by Frank Deford. Lawrence football coach will retire at end of year APPLETON Ron Roberts, who compiled a 121-54-1 record in 20 years as the football coach at Lawrence University, says he will retire at the end of the 1992-93 academic year.

Roberts, who is also the school's athletic director, wrestling coach and track coach, joined the school's athletic department in 1963 as an assistant football coach. He was named head football coach in 1965. Roberts coached the Vikings from 1965-83, stepped away for eight years and then last year was renamed head coach after Rich Agness resigned. During Roberts' run, Lawrence posted 15 winning seasons and won six Midwest Conference championships. Basketball Sacramento Kings guard Spud Webb tore ligaments in his left wrist during a 124-114 victory Sunday over the Los Angeles Lakers and he will be sidelined at least two months, the Kings announced Monday.

Webb, 29, suffered multiple ligament tears in his left wrist and will be "placed in a cast for a minimum of six weeks," said team physician Dr. Richard Marder. He said Webb will be out 8-12 weeks. Former NBA star Rick Barry says the Boston Celtics are mistreating his son, Jon, their unsigned first-round draft pick. "What they wanted to do was steal him," the elder Barry said from Iowa, where he coaches the Global Basketball Association's Cedar Rapids Sharpshooters.

"If they had offered him a three-year guaranteed contract starting at $500,000 with a 30-percent increase each year, he'd have been happy to sign during the summer." The Celtics reportedly have been trying to package Jon Barry with another guard, John Bagley, and a first-round pick for a power forward. The New Jersey Nets signed Rick Mahorn on Monday, reuniting the center-forward with coach Chuck Daly and giving the team a rugged veteran player. Mahorn, who played for Daly's championship Detroit team in 1988-89, will lend some muscle to the Nets as a reserve center behind Sam Bowie and Chris Dudley, as well as a back-up forward behind Derrick Coleman. Vernon Maxwell of the Houston Rockets was fined $7,000 on Monday for a flagrant foul against Nate McMillan of Seattle last week. The foul occured during Friday night's season-opener between the Rockets and Sonics in Yokohama, Japan.

Maxwell was ejected after the foul, which occured with 50 seconds left in the game. Former Wisconsin guard Trent Jackson signed with the Cedar Rapids Sharpshooters of the Global Basketball Association on Monday. A California high school basketball player has verbally committed to sign with Indiana University. Rob Foster, a 6-4 senior guard at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, plans to sign a national letter-of-intent on Wednesday, the first day of the NCAA's early signing period. Hockey Ousted Chicago Blackhawks general manager Mike Keenan says he was fired because of philosophical differences.

"I did not quit. I was fired," Keenan said Monday. Team owner Bill Wirtz's announced Friday that Keenan had resigned. "The reason I have to clarify this is that the last 17 years I've been coaching I've never given (the players) the license to quit and I certainly never would give myself the License to quit," Keenan said. On Friday, Wirtz said Keenan had asked for more power than any previous Blackhawks general manager.

Keenan disagreed. "I'm not a power seeker and an egomaniac," he said. "I didn't ask for anything more than what is the normal course of business in the National Hockey League." Football The attorney for Auburn coach Pat Dye questions the legality of secretly made tape recordings that led the NCAA to accuse the football program of rules violations. The NCAA sent Auburn University a letter of inquiry on Thursday outlining nine allegations. The letter resulted from tapes former Auburn player Eric Ramsey made and released in 1991 to back his claim he received improper cash and gifts from coaches and boosters.

Dye's attorney, Sam Franklin, spoke with the coach on Friday to formulate their defense, which will focus on Ramsey carrying a hidden recorder to make the tapes. Schuttz, Netherlands, del.
