Oakland Tribune, Tuesday, March 27, 1951 13 i NEW HIGHWAY LINK Food Dollar Down to 42i Labor Bureau's Figures Show i 77, 7 S' 9 42nd Avenue Freeway Opened to Traffic The 42nd Avenue Interchange, and Western Pacific Railroads, Food prices went down "a 1'ttle" in February but still were higher than any month in history, except for the January peak. This announcement was made today by Max D. Kossoris, re- gional director of the VS. Depart- ment of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, In San F-ancisco. The value of the food dollar in San Francisco, based on its 1939 purchasing power, was down to nearly 42 Mj cenU, the bureau re ported.

Unhappily for the housewife's budget, the bureau predicts the price is "bound to give way to higher prices for these items in the normal seasonal trend." Cost of meat was up bringing greater demands for chickens and fish which carried up those prices as well. Compared with prices a year ago, beef was up nearly 22 per cent, pork, 14 per cent; lamb, 17 per cent, and chickens, 19 per cent and fish, 16 per cent. Dairy products prices moved up 0.5 per cent and cereals and bakery products 0.2 per cent bringing both of these groups about 9 per cent above their year-ago levels.
