THE OSHKOSII NORTHWESTERN, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 193S CANDIDATES OFFER Samuel Spiritual Revival By the Rev. Alvln E. Bell And Alfred J. Boescher Samuel Spiritual Revival ILLUSTRATED SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON Samuel SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON Samuel sharply rebuked the people for their sin In forsaking Jehovah and serving false gods. "Return unto the Lord with all your hearts," he demanded.

From a small child Samuel faithfully served God ard his nation. God talked plainly with him, telling him his will for the The nation repented crying, "We have sinned against the Lord." In answer to Samuel's prayers for them God gave victory over the Philistines. To remind the nation of their debt to God for his help, Samuel erected a stone which he called "Ebenezer," meaning "Hitherto hath Jehovah helped us." (GOLDEN TEXT I Samuel 7:3.1 (The (5oldett (Test Announcements ij--: r'-f. X. 'm V- 1 rv 'A lid.

I Samuel 7:3 "Prepare your hearts unto the Lord, and serve hirn only." "5 The first words spoken by Kdi son's wax cylinder phonograph, or "talking machine" as it was then, were, "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." That first record might be more "comforting" to people in a bomb cellar than any of the jitterbug, jeepers and shag tunes which now come along, 50 years later. In fact, aside from the epic hymns of religious consolation, there are few more comforting words in our language. Like St. Paul, "seeing through a glass darkly, Shakespeare knew that the present moment, or even the present age, is but a tiny facet of universal reality. It is a poetic statement of Spinoza's "Viewpoint of Eternity." But, no matter how comforting the phonograph records may be, they speak only what is spoken to them.

They are neither oracles nor ministers of grace. Our limitations are their limitations. We have freighted them with both wisdom and folly, and that applies, too, to the bomb-dropping airplanes overhead.Thomas Alva Edison and the Wright brothers, and all men of the great cavalcade of science of the last half century, forged two-edged swords. They are instruments of good or evil as we make them so. The British Association for the Advancement of Science, meeting "BRASS TACKS" ON THE (The International Uniform Lea-Jon on the above topic for Sept 4 la I Samuel the Golden Text being 7:3.

"Prepare your hearts unto the Lord, and serve him only By DR. ALVIN E. BELL OF NO MAN in the Old Testament can it be said more truthfully than of Samuel that "he wore the white flower of a blamelesa life." Of his unselfish life the people to whom he had been a life-long blessing said. "Thou hast not defrauded us. nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man's hand A Call to Repentance Samuel challenged the people to bring about a genuine change of their own hearts as a requisite to God's bringing about a change of their outer circumstances He pointed out the way ol repentance as the way of recovery saying.

"If ye do return unto the Lord with all your hearts then put away the strange gods from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the Lord, and serve him only and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines It was a period" of great national depression and distress which Invited the attack of the nation's enemies For their defense Samuel urged them to rearm themselves spiritually, with the result that the people came in penitence and the self-discipline of fasting, crying, "We have sinned against the Lord." To Samuel they appealed. "Cease not to cry unto the Lord our God for us. that he will save us." This was all that God. was waiting at Cambridge, England, seeks to channel our marvelous scientific advance into the use and need of an enlightened civilization. They appoint a committee to organize and systematize this effort.

It is allied with and supplementary to similar foundation work of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, last year. Prominent on the committee Is II. G. Wells, useful liaison between the scientific and lay worlds, the John the Baptist of the social wilderness, crying doom unless we reorganize the world for peace and progress, rather than killing. It is quite clear by this time that Mr.

Britling didn't by any means "see it through." The scientists committee, in its personnel, has a range and diversity which covers all mundane problems. The knights of this round table would seize the g.ic;e of battle against war, poverty, disease, stupidity and the whole dark panoply of advancing chaos. It would be nice if we could just sit around and count our money and let them slay the dragons. But this is not King Arthur's day. It is the day of totalitarian war, whether we are fighting armies, germs or depression.

Thai's a point the scientists would like to drive home. They remind us that we are all in the same boat together. And too many of us are like the man in the story of the crippled "Wake up! The ship Is sinking," shouted a passenger to his friend. "What do we care? We don't own it," said the other. Thomas Mcllvnnc, lawyer and civic leader, writing on "Drift to Dictatorship," in the September issue of The North American Review, is similarly alarmed about what is going to happen unless we mend our ways.

The following citations from Ihe Bible are included in the lesson-Sermon: "This I say therefore, and tes- ify in the Lord, that ye hence forth walk not as other Gentiles Ivalk, in the vanity of their mind. laving the understanding dark- ned, being alienated from the ife of God through the ignorance I hat is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: That ye iut off concerning the former con-ersation the old man, which is orrupt according to the deceitful lists; And be renewed in the spirt If vour mind: And that ye put on Ihe new man, which after God is reated in righteousness and true ioliness" (Ephesians 4: 17, 18, zz U). The Lesson-Sermon includes Ihe following correlative passages from the Christian Science text "Science and Health with key to the Scriptures," by Mary laker Eddy "The description of man as hurelv tjhvsieal. or as both ma icnai ana spiritual, uui tium i ase deoendent upon his physical rganization, is the Pandora box, Irom whicn an ins nave gune orth, especially despair.

would not try It! "Ebenerer" When Samuel's method of recovery by way of revival had brought the nation deliverance he saw to It that the lessons of the depression period should not be forgotten "Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpeh and Shen and called the name of If Ebenezer saying. Hitherto hath the Lord helped us" He did not vainly take to himself the credit for the change of the nation's condition as thou eh he had planned that way but he gave the credit to Jehovah and to guarantee perpetual remembrance of this and gratitude for it he engraved tn stone the acknowledgement of the nation debt to God for blessings bestowed The founders of our nation had much the same Idea in mind for us when upon the recommendation of Bentamin Franklin. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson thev adoDted as the Great Seal of the United States a pyramid surmounted by the all-seeing eye of him whom they regarded as having prospered their undertakings, for the words over the eye read "Annult CoeDtiV which is but another way of saying, "Hitherto hath the Lord helped basic and drastic changes In the American party system, if we are to check the swift encroachment of the executive against the other branches of our government. He proposes a fairly simple expedient which deserves attention. He would remove the selection of the national committees of the major political parties from local political machines and establish it in the house.

"Congress will become independent of the president, and will resume its constitutional function of making the laws and cease to be merely a rubber stamp to register presidential decrees," says Mr. Mcllvane. "Under the existing system the president can deal individually with members of his party who have seats in congress, and since the president is more powerful than any single senator or representative, he can defeat the members of his party in congress in detail." This certainly looks like something worth looking over. There is, indeed, a crippling duality in our regional political organizations and congress, which has caused many a dead-end or dead-center in enlightened legislation. They produce the best hurricanes In a flat calm, fog at a moment's notice, rain at any time and snow on the hottest summer day. But they can't make night scenes outdoors unless the sun is at its brightest. A paradox perhaps, but lack of sunshine slowed up production on Samuel Goldwyn's "The Lady and the Cowboy" when the company went on beach location to make night scenes of uary 1 Cooper and Merle Oberon. In short, any kind of weather can be made in Hollywood, even to simulating broiling desert sunshine within the dark shelter of a soundproof and lightproof stage.
