An Auburn. University trustee said Monday that Georgia coach Vince Dooley accepted an offer to become Auburn's next football coach, then used the Auburn deal as a wedge to better his Georgia contract. "It is my opinion that Dooley had given us a commitment," said trustee Charles Smith. "That is also the opinion of several members of the board. "Then he used Auburn University as an instrument to get a contract at Georgia." After talking with Auburn officials last week, Dooley turned down a reported $1.8 million offer and decided to remain at Georgia.

"He (Dooley) had accepted at one time because the terms of the contract were set," said Smith. "He set the standards of the contract. Then, he got the boost over at Georgia." Dooley has previously denied charges similar to Smith's. 5 I 6 West 5 7 7 0 .643 307 261 0 443 371 296 0 .500 264 282 NBA standings EASTERN CONFERENCE 7 7 0 .500 265 287 4 10 0 J86 260 362 NATIONAL CONFERENCE East -Dallas 11 3 .786 405 246 x-Philadelphia 11 3 0 .786 340 184 0 .357 2W 302 Gervin.SA 28 312 185 111 29.0 Birdsong.KC 30 325 169 822 27.4 Thompson, On 27 267 163 701 26.0 Erving.PhN 29 282 159 723 24.9 Free.GS 28 245 195 690 244 English, Den 27 257 130 644 23.9 Mitchell, Cle 30 289 104 683 22.8 27 244 123 611 224 RtbouncSno Off Df Tot Avg Malone.Hou 25 162 206 368 14.7 Nater.SD 29 106 250 356 12.3 Sikma.Sea 27 61 256 317 11.7 Unsetd.Wash 27 91 202 293 10.9 Bird, Bos 26 63 215 278 10.7 Assists No. Avg 30 266 8.9 Johnson, LA 20 172 8.6 Nixon, LA 28 228 8.1 Rchrdsn.NY 23 178 7.7 Walker, NJ 24 171 7.4 Field Goal Percentage FG FGA Pet.

Bellard said Monday he was happy at Mississippi State and didn't have "any earthly idea" about rumors that he was in line for the Auburn job or perhaps one at Texas. SAN DIEGO Doug Scovil, offensive mastermind of Brigham Young's great passing attack, was named head coach at San Diego State Monday, replacing Claude Gilbert.

Scovil, 53, spent four of the last five years at BYU developing one of college football's most wide-open offenses. In making the announcement, San Diego State athletic director Gene Bourdet described Scovil as "one of the top offensive minds in football today, at any level. We feel he can carry on the great offensive passing tradition we have had." Gilbert was recently fired after six years in which his teams compiled a 61-26-2 record. MEMPHIS, Tenn. Coach Bobby Collins told Mem-.

"I called them today and told them my plans are to remain at USM and continue pur preparation for the Independence Bowl game and our recruiting efforts," Collins said. Memphis State president Dr. Thomas Carpenter and athletic director Billy Murphy flew to Hattiesburg Sunday 4to meet with Collins, the USM coach said. He declined to discuss details of the meeting.

Memphis State officials also refused comment on the Collins meeting. Committee Chairman Morris Savage said the committee knows the Southeastern Conference date to sign high school seniors is Saturday, but the committee is more interested in the school's long term football program. "Our purpose is to find the best possible football coach for Auburn University. We're looking for a man to bring about a successful football program," Savage said.

He said the committee would not speculate any more about who would get the job until someone has signed a contract. "The list of candidates for the job I saw included just about everybody in the United States," said Baylor Coach Grant Teaff, one whose name was mentined often. "I'm flattered to be included in that kind of company, but I'm not interesed in any jobs right now." Florida State's Bobby Bowden reportedly ranked with Dooley as Auburn's top choice, but, like Dooley, preferred to stay where he was. After Dooley announced his decision, Bowden said there was no change of mind on his own part. He insisted his team is better than the record indicates. He acknowledged the loss to the Vikings was the biggest disappoin-ment of the season for him.

The Bucs had a 10-0 halftime advantage before Minnesota began a comeback surge behind the sharp passing of Tommy Kramer, who set up one touchdown, passed for another and wound up with 264 yards 201 of it in the last 30 minutes of play. "We were in pretty good shape. Then two things happened," said McKay. He called a long pass on a third-and-1 hoping to catch the Vikings off guard and notch the score to 17-0. If it didn't work, and Tampa had to punt, he was counting on the defense to hold Minnesota as they had in the first half when they didn't let them any deeper than the Bucs 42.

Neither plan worked and Kramer fired 74 yards in the air and ran for four more to set up a TD. TALLAHASSEE DEMOCRAT Borg and Lloyd top tennis rankings TAMPA (AP) Coach John McKay's mood was somber Monday, his face long and his one-liners infrequent. He puffed almost mechanically on a cigar as he summarized: "Now we play for pride." The letdown was obvious in the wake of Sunday's 21-10 defeat by Minnesota. The loss snuffed out his Tampa Bay Buccaneers' last flicker of hope to repeat as NFC Central champs. "The winners crow; the losers eat crow," he said stony-faced. The victory put the Vikings out in front in the division, 8-6, and dropped the Bucs to 5-8-1.

McKay clearly had expected a different outcome. "I thought we'd score 28 points and win the game. That's what our practice indicated." Despite the disappointment, McKay let it be known Tampa wouldn't roll over for contenders Detroit and Chicago in their last two games. "This is a race in which I don't want to be the person who gives the other team the edge," he said. "To pull everybody and lose the game to give some other team a chance, to me Rattlers (Continued from page 5B) said Giles, "but we have really gotten good play from bench Issac Brown, Kevin Bailey, Mike Toomer and Luther Sandifer.

"We feel like Alex Bunion (starting point guard) is doing exactly what we need." In Jacksonville, the Rattlers will face a talented team known for its defense. The Dolphins, 1-2, lost 59-57 to Florida State last Saturday. "They'll be tough, especially at their place," said Giles. "They have a real physical team, and they try to dominate to dominate you defensively." JU has allowed an average of 58.7 points per game, one of the top marks in the country. The Dolphins opened the season with a 57-44 loss to Wake Forest; beat Eckerd 90-60 and then lost to FSU at Tully.

Mike Hackett, a 6-5 forward, leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 15.3 and 7.7, respectively. The Dolphins also have a highly-regarded guard in 5-8 Maurice Roul-hac. He's averaging 9.0 and 2.3 points per game. Following the Jacksonville game, the Rattlers return to Tallahassee for their first home game of the season. FAMU plays Texas Southern here Saturday night.

Borg, 24, beat John McEnroe in the Wimbledon final to win the prestigious title for an unprecented fifth consecutive time.

He also won the Masters and the French Open in 1980, but had his Grand Slam hopes shattered by McEnroe in the U.S. Open final. Lloyd, 26, who returned to tennis in March after a three-month layoff, lost only one match all year the Wimbledon final to Evonne Goolagong. Besides her fifth U.S. Open crown, Lloyd also won the Italian, French and Canadian opens and the U.S.

Following Borg in the male top 10 rankings were McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia, Guillermo Vilas of Argentina and Gene Mayer (tied for fifth), Vitas Gerulaitis, Harold Solomon, Jose-Luis Clerc of Argentina and Brian Gottfried. On the women's top 10, Lloyd was followed by Tracy Austin, Goolagong of Australia, Martina Navratilova, Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia, Andrea Jaeger, Bil-lie Jean King, Wendy Turnbull of Australia, Virginia Ruzi-ci of Romania and Kathy Jordan. MONTREAL Jimmy Connors has withdrawn from the World Championship Tennis tournament because of an ankle injury, according to organizers of the $320,000 round-robin tourney. Connors badly sprained his left ankle while playing in Milan several weeks ago, tournament spokesman Roger Labonte said.

His place will be taken by Eliot Teltscher of Los Angeles, ranked 10th In world standings. Connors' cancellation leaves John McEnroe as the favored player in the tournament.
