Fish and Wildlife officers will not be enforcing the requirement for steel shot, except in 12-gauge. Hunters using 16- or 20-gauge shotguns will be allowed to use lead shot this season, even in steel-shot zones, except in national wildlife refuges that allow hunting. Areas of the state in which steel shot will be required in 12-gauge include that portion of Brevard County east of 1-95; Osceola, Broward, Dade and Glades Counties; Leon County (exclusive of Lake Talquin and the Ochlockonee River); Lake Miccosu-kee in Leon and Jefferson Counties; and Orange and Lochloosa Lakes in Alachua County. Commission biologists Thomas Goodwin and Jimmie McDaniel recently flew some of the major waterfowl collecting grounds in the Panhandle to count waterfowl. Lake Iamonia has about 2,000 ring-necks, Miccosukee 6,000 and Jack-son-Carr 1,000 for the opening of the season today.

The biologists reported a count in Apalachee Bay (Piney Island to Hickory Mound Impoundment) of 30,000 redheads, 8,000 scaup and 1,000 widgeon. In the Hickory Mound area, the count was 1,500 redheads and 1,500 scaup on the Gulf, with the impoundment holding a mixture of 600 teal, gadwall, widgeon, mallards and NFL team statistics AMERICAN CONFERENCE OFFENSE Yards Rush Pass Eddie Lastinger, Shuford Davis, John Parmer and Kennon Buzbee, all eight-pointers. Hunters logging bucks up to six points include Joe Arrington, Jerry Perkins, Tim Phipps, Joe Padgham, Tom Stich, Hugh Hinely, Roger C. Smith, Gary Hodnett and W.C. Stubbs.

Nine-year-old Robert Bryson III bagged a spike. On the same hunt, Marrary Wadsworth 12, also took a spike. Hunters wishing to enter the trophy contest can register at any time during the season. However, they be preregistered to enter a buck for the prizes. Roy Clark bagged an eight-point buck, according to Johnie Jackson's Grocery on Lake Talquin.

Others taking bucks were Albert Mayo, Eddie Ditto, Bob Conley and Eric Chandler, Jr. Most were taken in the Robert Brent Wildlife Management Area. For the deer hunter who doesn't have a place to hunt, one of the best deals around is 1-75 Hunting Preserve three miles west of Valdosta, operated by Bud McKey. McKey has 6,000 acres of land along the Withlacoochee River. The area originally was stocked with deer from Wisconsin and Bud's hunters have taken some bucks with huge antlers and body size.

The bucks are starting into rut now. In addition to deer, Bud also offers quail hunting. The questionable fumble occurred in the third period at the Atlanta one-yard line Payton insisted he did not fumble and was thrown out of the game for touching an official during his protest.

Several Falcons players said later they did not think Payton had fumbled. "The films show otherwise," said Bennett. "They show the ball loose before Payton hit the ground. It was a good call." an NFL spokesman said Commissioner Pete Rozelle still is reviewing films of Payton's controversial contact with head linesman Ed Marion, and plans to review more before he decides whether to lift the fine against Payton. The spokesman said not all the available film and videotape from Sunday's game had arrived at league headquarters and that, because of the Thanksgiving holiday, it was unlikely a decision would be reached this week.

With Chicago leading 17-14 late in the third period, Payton carried to the Atlanta one-yard line, but umpire Tom Hensley ruled Payton had fumbled and that Atlanta's Rolland Lawrence recovered. When Marion conferred with Hensley and likewise awarded the ball to the Falcons, Payton rushed toward the Marion to protest. In doing so, he pushed the official and immediately was ejected from the game, which Atlanta went on to win 28-17. Payton contended he had stumbled and put out his hands to break the fall, not to push Marion. 7 NHL standings Campbet Conference Patrick Division 1 TGFGAPts OPEN 9-6 N.MONROE EfUYIrTIU Philadelphia N.Y.
