"Why fight him? I respect the came in one day and my parking space was gone. A telephone call followed telling me the show was over." Klugman is the first to admit "In my work I'm difficult. I've never been cowardly. And I don't chicken out.

I refuse to compromise. I've always been very confident and I think it's because I love what I'm doing." He remembers starring in "Big Story" in 1949. The director read a line for him and Klugman furiously jumped down his throat. you were an actor, you couldn't get a job as Howdy Doody, so don't read a line for Klugman told him. "He wouldn't hire me again for 20 years," he said.

i By KAY GARDELLA Ntw York Nw Mrvlct NEW YORK Jack Klugman's series "Quincy," about a medical examiner, is doing very well, thank you. But to hear Klugman tell it, the series' ratings owe little to NBC's promotion. "It's the best kept secret on television," the outspoken actor said. He may have more to gripe about next season. The series will be moving this fall from Friday night at 10 p.m.

to Thursday night. The program is broadcast locally on channels 2 (ca-, ble 5), 10 (cable 10) and 13 (cable 13). The shift was the idea of Fred Silverman, NBC's new entertainment chief. Klugman is not beefing about and walk away. He balked when they expanded the series beyond an hour, realizing that the motivation was money, not good drama.

And he wasn't completely happy with the creative staff. This season it's a new ball game. He and producer Peter Thompson see eye-to-eye, he said, on everything. "We're going to bat with 22 shows for quality," he said. Klugman's long experience has taught him one thing: "Nobody gets a job because he's a nice guy and nobody got fired because he made money for a company.

If a nice guy's numbers drop, he'll be dumped in a minute. "Take it from someone who knows. man," he said in a recent interview. He may not be so understanding by the middle of next season. His competition on ABC will be "Barney Miller" and "Soap." On CBS it will be "Hawaii Five-O," one of TV's record But Klugman is playing It cool, an unusual state for him.

He gets more than a little animated when it comes to anything involving his work scripts, writers, directors, producers, you name it. He wants realism in his scripts. In a coming episode involving race driving, for example, he instructed the writers to find out what the business was all about. At one point during the series I S. 1 ih- What about the writers whom he tries to enlighten about their craft? Suppose they did the same thing to him? What would he do? "I'd take it, and if they weren't any good, I'd do the same thing that was done to me I wouldn't hire them for 20 years!" he said.

Klugman regrets that "The Odd Couple" the show he did with Tony Randall didn't stay on the tube. But there's a rainbow ahead for fans of the two actors. "I met Johnny for dinner last Saturday night," Ms. Travolta said. "We went to a small, out-of-the-way restaurant in Los Angeles. I tried to hide Johnny in the corner. But soon the word spread around, and we were mobbed.

Then we tried two other places. It wasn't until after midnight that we finally got something to eat. "Johnny is one of my favorite people. I love him," she said. "Through it all he has never lost his perspective.

Let me tell you, maybe at first it may open a few doors. You may get one role, but if you're not good, you won't be called back," she said. WILL THE TRAVOLTAS ever do a family special together? "We're talking about that very thing," Ms. Travolta said. "Maybe for Christmas." She has just finished taping a segment for ABC's top-rated "Love Boat," in which she plays the mother of Jimmy Baio of ABC's "Soap." In the story Jimmy has a crush on another passenger, played by Melissa Gilbert of NBC's "Little House on the Prairie." The two hit it off, and that upsets the mother.

Also on her agenda are several guest appearances on "Welcome Back, Kotter," playing Arnold Hor-shack's mother; a guest-star role in the CBS miniseries, "Mr. Horn," starring David Carradine, Richard Wid-mark and Karen Black; and an appearance on "Eight Is Enough."
