Mike Solomon last three touchdowns Chester passed to Emanuel White for the two-point conversion, and FAMU took the lead at 29-22 with 8:14 to play. There was no more coming back for Massachusetts.

Solomon put the game away when he capped an eight-play 55-yard drive by racing 20 yards for his third touchdown of the game. That score gave him 17 for the season, a FAMU record. The old one was 16 held by Willie Galimore and Al Frazier. The two had set the record in 1956. The Rattlers went for two following Solomon's score, but the try failed.

Still, FAMU had an unsur-mountable 35-22 lead with 3:15 to play. Massachusetts' final touchdown came on the last play of the game on a 34-yard McEvilly pass to Chris Kurts. I 1, Massachusetts settled for a '22-21 lead with 12:56 to play. Now it was the Rattlers' turn to come back again. And they even got a little help from the wind.

FOUNTAINE DROPPED back to punt on fourth-and-five from the FAMU 47. The wind, however, stole his kick, and when the ball finally stopped rolling backwards, FAMU had it at its own 49. Massachusetts lost two yards on the punt. The Rattlers drove to the Massachusetts 35, but Chester's pass was intercepted by Steve LeMay and the Minutemen had the ball at the 19. Three plays later, FAMU got they-ball back when McEvilly fumbled and Joe Yates recovered at the Rat- tiers' 27.

Solomon went up the middle on the next play for a touchdown. ITlendelsoiVs A Division of Avery's, Inc. Nine plays later, Minuternan Sanoro Vitiello kicked a 20-yard field goal with 10:18 to play in the quarter.

In the second quarter, the Rattlers' Sammy Knight suffered the first of two blocked punts, and the Minute-men took over at FAMU's 1. Knight had dropped back to punt from his 1 1, but the snap from center Ricky Williams was low. Massachusetts couldn't score, however, and wound up with a fourth-and-goal at the 3 following a fumble by quarterback Mike McEvilly. Vitiello came on to kick another 20-yard field goal, and it was 6-0 with 10:14 left in the half. A BIG FACTOR IN the game was a 20-25 mph wind that blew from the north.

That wind was so strong that the Minutemen tried to let it win the game for them. It bothered Knight so much that he punted six times for a 9 yard average. Ironically, both of his blacked punts came while he was kicking with the wind. That wind also bothered FAMU quarterback Albert Chester. He went 0-for-7 passing and had two intercepted.

But not even the wind could offset FAMU's superior talent on this day. Down 6-0, the Rattlers drove 55 yards following Vitiello's second field goal. Chester tied the game when he ran in untouched from the 1. Vincent Coleman added the point after touchdown, and it was 7-6 FAMU with 8:30 left in the half. The Rattlers had moved against the wind in the first quarter, but they had it at their backs in the second period.

It made a difference. The wind held up a punt by Minute-man Tim Fountaine, and it went only 27 yards. FAMU took over at the Massachusetts 49 and moved racehorse style to the 4. Chester capped the seven-play drive by scoring his second touchdown on a 4-yard option play. Coleman's kick gave FAMU a 14-6 lead with 4:22 left until halftime.

THE FIRST HALF ended with the score still 14-6, but it was no time for Rattler fans to relax. They knew that wind would stare FAMU in the face in the third period. Massachusetts knew that, too. FAMU had a fourth-and-eight at its 6, and Knight dropped back to punt. He hit the ball high, and it traveled down the field for about 20 yards.

Then the wind blew it back to the FAMU 8 before Knight jumped on it. It was break No. 3 for the Minute-men, and they took advantage of it. On third-and-goal from the 1, halfback Cliff Pedrow dove into the end zone. The Minutemen went for the two-point conversion, but McEvilly's pass intended for Chris Kurtz fell incomplete.

The score remained FAMU 14, Massachusetts 12, with 6:54 left in the quarter. Later, the Rattlers had a fourth-and-10 at their 30. This time Knight's punt was a little better, but it still traveled only 19 yards against the rampaging wind. Massachusetts took over at the FAMU 49 and had a third-and-10 from that spot after two plays. McEvilly dropped back to pass and nearly had his helmet torn off by defensive end John King.

But McEvilly ducked and somehow threw King off his shoulders. Then he passed 35 yards to tight end Chuck Balboni. That gave the Minutemen a first down at the 14, but the FAMU defense stiffened. Massachusetts couldn't gain a first down, and Vitiello came on to kick a 29-yard field goal. His kick gave Massachusetts the lead again at 15-14 with 1:57 left in the quarter.

BUT IT WAS COMEBACK time again for the Rattlers. FAMU took over at its 29 following Vitiello's field goal. Tailback Melvin McFayden subbing for the injured Ike Williams gained 6 yards to move the ball to the 35. Then Solomon took the ball from Chester on a sprint draw play and raced 65 yards for a touchdown. Coleman kicked the extra point, and the Rattlers led again, 21-15.

But the Rattlers gave back the momentum and the lead almost as soon as they got it. FAMU had a fourth-and-four at its 40, and Knight had the wind at his back as he dropped back to punt. But King's snap was low again, and John McDonald blocked Knight's kick. Steve Telander recovered the ball for Massachusetts, and the Minutemen had a first down at the FAMU 13. Three plays later, McEvilly passed 9 yards to Pedrow for a touchdown.
