Junt 1953 Clly Mason CKj-, la, -At Vour Li Mock Engravings on Display By LYDIA BARRETTE Mason City Librarian Twenty copperplate engravings Gladys Mock have been hung in the exhibit hall at the library. They arc on tour to museums through the Studio Guild. Copperplate engraving differs from etching in that the artist works with tools directly on the polished plate. Jn etching, acids are used to bring out the design. The study of graphic arts is an interesting one and the library has 25 or 30 good books on this phase of it.

Often the designs are suggestive to people who like to draw, or do linoleum block printing, silk screen work or stenciling. Of course, designs can be much more involved in engraving, but the engravings offer excellent opportunity for studying design and balance. Gladys Mock's work has been demonstrated on television. She has appeared on "Manhattan High Lights" program. She was born and now lives in New York.

Imaginative, Modern Her work is imaginative and modern. She wrote monthly articles for Magazine of Art for several years. She has not attempted abstractions nor is her work realistic. This exhibit will interest people who like quiet, who appreciate a sense of rhythm and who enjoy good pictures. Two new magazines added to the library as gifts are "Quatrain Digest," a bi-moufhiy magazine which the Writers Club here is giving, and "Ceramics," a monthly magazine, gift of the pottery club that made all the little pigs for the Centennial.

Delmar W. Olson, professor of industrial arts, Kent State University in Ohio, brought copy of his book, ''Pottery," to the library last week. On request he inscribed it. It will go into the Iowa Room as there is a regular circulating copy for people who are getting started in ceramics. Centennial Pigs His parents, Mr.

and. Mrs. Walter Olson, 612 Pennsylvania S.E., still live here. He and his son Jonny came to visit them. Delmar attended high school here.

He and Jonny were interested in seeing the little Centennial pigs and the modeling work done by the school children. This exhibit still was at the library at the time of their visit though now it has been returned. Dehnar Olson must be a master teacher. His book is clear and direct. The illustrations will help beginners in the art.

He discusses the clay, glazes and glazing as well as design and decorating techniques. He has a chapter on hand forming methods, on the potter's wheel and on mold making and casting. There is another book this week on ceramics for the potter by Ruth H. Home. Service Novels Gathered together by Everett Bleiler and T.

E. Dikly is a volume, "Year's Best Science Fiction Novels." Reginald Bretnor has edited "Modern Science Fiction." Youth is intrigued by these science novels. The remarkable bhowing of Ihe Phillies in the last four years is well written up in "Philadelphia Phillies" by Frederick Liob and Stan Baumgartner. Juhnny Jlizc has a new baseball book, "How to Hit." Tom Meany pays tribute to stars in the game in "Baseball's Greatest Players." One of the outstanding students of the game in this country today, Arthur Mann. has a book, "How to Play Winning Baseball." The silhouettes in "Hoofed Mammals of the World" will perhaps be as much in demand as the information about animals.
