SOPER, 41 MAIN STREET. WE fesiL MILLS mRY tion of archbishop of tho province will necessitate tho appointment of bishop In hli place. Although this Is a matter entirely outside tho pervlcw of secular Influence and is nono of tho biiHlness of newspaper and Trot estates, The Nortuwkbteiix can not forego tho pleasure of saying that It truly believes that tho appointment of tho Very Reverend Father James O'Malley of this city to tho bishopric would meet with the cordial approval of all who aro personally acquainted with that gentleman. It Is not too much to say that Father O'Malley has gained a very warm place, per sonally, in the hearts of all who know him. Ills cordial manners, his pro verbial frankness In all his associa tions with his fellow citizens, irres pective of denominational aillllatlong, his studious exactness in retraining from Interference with tho views and freedom of others, his lack of tend encyto anything lika fanaticisms, and in fact his general private and public life and Intercourse with others have mado him highly es teemed among his fellow men.

It would, no doubt, bo pleasing to his neighbors and friends In this city to see him called to tho bishop's chair. The president has finally mado an appointment to fill the vacancy on tho supremo bench caused by tho death of Associate Justice Miller. lie has ap pointed to that position Judge Henry Brown of Detroit, who is at pres ent United States Judgo for tho east ern district of Michigan. Tho ap pointment is something of a surprise, for Judgo Brown's name was scarcely mentioned in that connection. The new jnstlco Is a native of Massa chusetts where ho was born in 1830.

In 1875 ho was appointed to the Uni ted States district bench. In 1873 he compiled a volume of admiralty re ports in which branch of the law he is said to be especially proTIcIcnt. The appointment is highly spoken of by all who know Judge Drown. The Pryor fiasco at 'cw London has como to an end.

Tho only evidence of consequence was that Pryor and another man came into a livery stable about twelve o'clock on the night that Mead was murdered and called for a bucket of water to wash In, and told the livery stable boy not to tell of It or they would put several bullets through him. Tho justice evidently could not find that washing hands at midnight had any great amount of connection with a murder committed the same niprht. and as to tho threat to put bullets through the young man who brought tho water, that might have been the wild west manner of thanking him for his trouble. Eben E. Eesford, the poet, florist and recluse of Shlocton was married Monday evening.

In an editorial artlclo on Tuesday tho Time referred to Senator fcpooir- er as having In the last campaign ar rayed lilmsolf In opposition to largo number of private Institutions of education." Tho Insinuation meant to bo cast, Is, of course, that In supporting tho principles of the educational question as laid down In tho Republican platform. Senator Spooner arrayud himself In opposition to the parochial schools. This has been a stock Ho of tho Democrat ic papers until It has beconio too mouldy for further use. Tho whole Democratic campaign was waged on falsehood, misrepresenta tion and prejudice.

The Democratic press and politicians kept howling and blatting thatbecauso the Republicans had declared In favor of compulsory education, and twelve weeks of In struction each year in tho English language, their real Intentions were to close up the parochial schools. Tho lie was infamous. During tho whole campaign not one word was heard or Tead In opposition to or condemnation of tho parochial fanatics of tho opposition kept constantly attacking tho public schools and calling them hot beds of vice which all christian people ought to shun. If what was said in tho last campaign in denunciation of tho public schools Lad been said by any party or faction against the parochial schools, there would have been Insurrection in the land. But if anything is attacked In this 'country, it must always be one of the bulwarks of our liberties in order to meet with no insistence.

The old lying campaign yell of tho Democrats, that the Republican party had designs against tho parochial schools or that it sought to crush them, might as well bo hung up to dry. There is no power in law or elsewhere to close up any private school or educational institution, and nobody wants to Interfere with or hamper any of them, even if he could. The Silver Craze. The New York Ilerald does not give much support to tho proposition for an endless coinage of silver. It draws the following rather forcible picture: The owners of silver mines are very plausible, and at times eloquent.

Naturally so, for nothing gives a man such voluminous command of persuasive rhetoric as tho fact that ho has goods for sale. We admire tho oratory of these gentlemen, but can't repress a feeling that they have bribed themselves with their own bullion to ac cept a theory which is false. They build a beautiful rainbow of promise. With the free coinage of their metal we are to have high wages, plenty of cakes and ale, steady labor, national prosperity and a milltnnial era which will make us unwilling to even go to heaven. Tho rest "of us can mtf that if wo ever consent to sit on ho top of that rainbow wo shall within tho next twenty years slido down tho greased outer edge and drop Into the bottomless pit of bankruptcy, where tho monometallic silver devil will grin at our folly and stack us in heaps as fools.

Now, there would be no danger of such a catastrophe if i were not for tho fact that in country everything is suK to political deals bargM and am. bit.ons. Ifthedetr oj the sivcr Tjen were to bo consi(lored on its merits aloe W(mld bercrliscd with. out cation and with emphasis. To-morrow is Christmas, and the annual hustle and bustlo in preparation for the merry-makings will close with tho silent and mysterious mid-night hours to-night.

To most people Christmas has stolen on almost unawares. The weather has been almost akin to Indian summer. Outdoor occupations have not ceased. Tho ground has hardly frozen solid, and tho absence of snow has given anything but a Christmas aspect to December. People have been unusually busy; all sorts of employment has been plenty, and tho winter so far has been one of activity.

But tonight is Christmas eve, although many may hardly bo able to realize that tho season has so far advanced, and ot course everybody will feel constrained to pause long enough to see that Santa Claus gets a free and open passage down the chimney tonight, lest the children be disappointed on tho morrow. The Tariff Reform league of New York held a banquet and jollification last night to celebrate the recent Democratic victory. Of course Mr. Cleveland was the orator of tho even lug and tho center of attruc-' tion. Grover took occasion to alludo indirectly as often as possible to his tariff message and other things that were suggestive of his availability as a caDdWate without over-treading tha bounds of modesty.
