Tristram Shandy, in the humorous opening chapters of the book which bears his name and purports to record his life and 'ijiiuiont, tells us that his father was at one ii me afflicted with sciatica, and that this tlllietioo was indirectly the cause of events trhich had a mast baleful and unhappy flect upon his own future life. Little natters like these often do affect the career tot only of the sufferer himself, but ol hone bv whom he is surrounded, and pc-r-ihps Tristram's subsequent misfortunes, veri more than be knew, might all tx- rared to that sciatica from which tit. ather, "a Turkey merchant one of tin nost regular men in everything he did hether it was matter of business or mat- amusements, that ever lived" sut all December, January and rebru- try.

Sciatica and other diseases must 1 held responsible for a good deal that goe wrong in the present day also, and even at-attack of indigestion in so august a person age as a President or King may lead tt events that may all'ect the destinies of nations. An attack of sciatica, however, fron which Mr. T- L. hat held, a contractu! and builder of Milwaukee, has recently suffered, painful as it was, has beet attended with at least one good result, fu which Mr. Chatfield is thankful, and thai is it has shown him that there is a core for the disease.

Mr. Chattield lives at No. 36') Eleventh, avenue, and is well known in Milwaukee. To one who called noon him in reference to Lis case he told this story "Yes: I was afflicted terribly. I took tome Athlophoros and the disease Is gone.

I will explain how it wis. Rheumatism is not a new thing with me by any means. I hud the sciatica for many years and tried many kinds of medicine without any re lief. Uf course, there would be times when I would sutler worse than at others, es- Ccially in damp and' stormy weather, ist fall I had a very severe attack, prob ably tiie worst ever had. I was so badly crippled that I could not walk and I could not get any sleep.

except when the doctor would inject mor- fihine. Then I would be able to doze a ittle while. I read almut Athlophoros In the papers and decided to try it ia my case. After using about two-thirds of a bottle the pain went away as if by some magic power and in a few days 1 was en tire It well and went about mv work." Did vou have any returns of the disease durine the severe winter?" "No: nothing to speak of. I felt a little twinge in my right leg, but I attribute that to my leaving on the medicine so soon.

got well so quickly that I Quit taking the medicine and did not really give it a fair chance to clear the disease entirely out of my system. It any sutlerer rrom rheumatism is made sick by the Athlophoros in taking it according to the directions I would advise him to take smaller doses, but to stick to the medicine, as it will surely cure him as it did me. E. L. Diinock, of tho firm of Dimock llayner, insurance agents, Last Mil waukee street, Janesville, who wasso seriously afflicted with rheumatism in his hips and legs that lie could not move with out great trouble and intense pain, gives this as hisexpcricnee with Athlophoros: I have now used one bottlo of Athlophoros with the most siitisfuctory results, being almost entirely free from pain." At about eiirht o'clc I at evening a surprise was sprung on tae peoplw of Oebkoth when it was announced be yond a doubt that Carltoa Foster, the Republican candidate for niayor.bad been elettea by a uamiionie majonij, and that Andrew llaben, whom dew ocrats for some time have fondly e-lurved to be invincible, had been defeated. A nother surprise was received when after the returns were all in it was found that eight out of ttie twelve aldermen elected were republi cans, and that practically speaking the entire city nan gone itepuuucaa iy a haadsonue majority.

As the news spread over the city. Main street soon nuud wnu interested men. who with something of the enthusiasm that attends the outcome of a national campaign gave vent to their feelings by repeated cheers and by partaking of whatever the victorious candi'iates Daa to oaer ia the way of cigars sad refreshments. The Arion band was soon out and serenaded the Mayor elect who received the crowd of visitors in a cordial manner with a brief and appro priate speech after which the band proceeded to serenade It A. pink, treasurer elect who is also the business manager of the band.

In the meantime the O. A. K. dram corps turned out and paraded up and down Main street so that for a time itseenied as if the exciting election times of last full had returned. Followinr will be seen the eiar-t votes which each of the candidates for the different ofllces received, whirh will explain why the republicans felt So jubilant: FOB MAYOR.

Schmidt, 437; I.ueck. ISO; Weston, By the above it is shown that of the newly-elected aldermen the following are republicans: Cole, Radford, Hor-nick, Farrand, Sawtelt, Thompson, Laabs and Cowling; and the following democrats: Heath, Uillcr, Lutz, Du-gan. Add to these Jones, Brand, Stevens, Kilp and Owens, republican aldermen who hold over, aud it is seen that the council is republican by l't to 4, and that it is in the power of the majority if they see fit to elect a representative in the place of Alderman rjchneiderof the Sixth ward, who is now in the Northern hospital. Various reasons have been assigned for tht wholesale election of republicans, all of which probably were factors in bringing about the final result Carlton Foster was popular with the workingmen of the city and with manv, Democrats. Ia niany of the wards there was great dissatisfaction between the Germans and the Irish, resulting in many of the latter going over to the Republicans.

In many instances also the Republicans bad the most popular men up. One reason assigned for the defeat of Andrew llaben, upon whichjhrewd pol iticians teom to lay great stress, is that the Tom Wall Democrats especially, wanted to see Mr. Haben shelved and out of the way so that when it comes to congressional nom inations next fall he will have no power to hinder Mr. Wall if the latter should want the Democratic nomination for congress. As it is, the result is considered on all sides as very flattering for Mr.

roster, and extremely satisfactory to the Re publicans. In connection with the events of last evening, it may be Said that on all sides were beard congratu lations for Mr. Foster, who iu an in formal way held a reception in the Business Men's rooms. At the time he was serenaded at his home W. B.
